Director Nitesh Tiwari is crafting a two-part Indian mythological epic, the Ramayana, that serves as the historic Indian debut for Hans Zimmer. The Academy Award winner joins forces with A.R. Rahman to create a soundscape that blends global excellence with Indian soul. This collaboration marks a significant milestone for the industry.

The first installment is set to arrive on Diwali 2026, perfectly timed for the Diwali festivities, and part two on Diwali 2027. Ranbir Kapoor takes on the mantle of Lord Rama, while Yash portrays the formidable Ravana. Sai Pallavi portrays Sita with grace, joined by Sunny Deol as the mighty Hanuman and Ravi Dubey as the loyal Lakshman. The supporting cast features seasoned actors like Arun Govil as Dashrath and Lara Dutta as Kaikeyi to add depth to the royal household.

With a staggering budget reaching up to ₹4,000 crore, the film aims for a worldwide IMAX release, as reported by The Hindu. Visual effects giant DNEG is handling the post-production to ensure a level of immersion comparable to Avatar. The musical approach avoids contemporary film tropes, focusing instead on sacred shlokas and soulful bhajans. A.R. Rahman described the process of working with Zimmer as terrifying yet deeply exciting.

The narrative foundation of this project draws from the most ancient versions of the sacred text.

A reimagined script based on legendary ancient book

This Ramayana 2026 retelling shifts its focus toward the Valmiki Ramayana (as the teaser shows a timeline associated with Valmiki's historical context) to present a more humane and grounded portrayal of the hero. While the Ramcharitmanas remains a devotional pillar, the filmmakers chose the earlier scripture to appeal to a global audience.

“Whenever the world descends into chaos, he is always the answer. Ruling our hearts for over 5,000 years – our protector, our hero, the legend,” reads the teaser. This strategic choice highlights Prince Rama as the Maryada Purushottam (supreme man who adheres to honor, righteousness, and moral boundaries).

Producer Namit Malhotra intends to bridge the gap between historical texts and modern cinematic storytelling for billions of viewers. The teaser showcases Rama not just as a deity, but as a protector and a king facing immense trials. This perspective aligns with the historical context often associated with Valmiki's original writings.
