Childhood fairy tales never retire; they simply change costumes for every generation that insists nostalgia should look shinier. The most familiar reinventions belong to Disney, which has repeatedly reshaped animated classics into live-action spectacles like Cinderella and Aladdin.

But TCU, not wanting to fit into the recreation norms, has escalated the idea, transforming Pinocchio from an endearing moral fable into a full-blown horror film.

Pinocchio: Unstrung is an upcoming British independent slasher film directed by Rhys Frake-Waterfield, continuing his deliberate dismantling of childhood comfort. The film reimagines The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi, replacing moral lessons with brutality.

The narrative follows Geppetto and his grandson James, whose gift of a magical doll initiates catastrophe rather than wonder. Pinocchio absorbs the world without nuance, interpreting goodness and evil with chilling simplicity. That rigid worldview drives him toward a violent crusade against anything he deems corrupt.

The cast reinforces the film’s grim tone, with Richard Brake portraying Geppetto and Robert Englund lending his voice to the Cricket. Cameron Bell plays James, while Evan Lloyd voices Pinocchio, emphasizing menace over innocence throughout the story. As per IMDb, the film is set to release on  May 7, 2026.

With this film, the TCU once again proves it specializes in turning bedtime stories into something best avoided before sleep.

TCU's talent for twisting fates

The TCU has discovered a dependable talent for making childhood memories deeply uncomfortable. It all began with Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey, which took a honey-loving bear and repaid abandonment with claws, blood, and very little sentimentality.

The escalation continued with Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey 2, introducing more monstrous incarnations of Tigger and Owl. The universe expanded further through Peter Pan's Neverland Nightmare, where Peter Pan abducts children, and Bambi: The Reckoning, which transforms Bambi into a mutated engine of revenge.

Upcoming projects like Awakening Sleeping Beauty, Snow White Returns, and Alice & The Mad Hatter promise to twist familiar stories into dark, unpredictable horror. Even the untitled Mary Poppins film suggests that no beloved character is safe from the franchise’s signature blend of nostalgia and nightmare.

Within this framework, Pinocchio: Unstrung fits naturally, transforming Carlo Collodi’s moral fable into a violent parable of rigid morality. While horror fans await Netflix’s next big scare, they can prepare by revisiting the Poohniverse: Monsters Assemble. Reminding everyone that with the ever-expanding TCU, childhood tales are no longer safe, proving that nostalgia can be as terrifying as it is familiar.
