In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Latveria is heavily guarded, fictional European nation ruled by the main villain, Doctor Doom, who is played by Robert Downey Jr. in Avengers: Doomsday.

The Birth of the kingdom

14th to 16th Century

The foundations of this enigmatic territory, Latveria, were laid during the 14th century. Karl Haasen and Rudolfo Haasen successfully captured territory from Transylvania to establish the independent nation. King Rudolfo I became the first official monarch, while Karl Haasen was named Baron Karl Haasen.

Political instability struck in the 15th century. Following the passing of Baron Karl Haasen III in 1447, Vlad Draasen ascended the throne. The harsh rule of Vlad Draasen deeply divided the populace until 1544, when the Bolgorad Treaties finally restored the Haasen bloodline to power. Architectural monuments arose during the 16th century.

1588: Count Sabbat and King Stefan I initiated the construction of a massive stronghold that would later be known as Castle Doom.

1593: A second major fortification was constructed, which eventually became the Citadel of Doom.

World War II and the Fortunov Dynasty

During World War II, the Fortunov family retained total control of the throne under Vladimir Vassily Gonereo Tristian Mangegi Fortunov, who held the titles of Baron of Sabbat, Baron of Haasen, and Baron of Krozi. The nation was already a recognized technological leader during this era. Baron Strucker actively solicited the assistance of the Fortunov family in exchange for keeping Nazi forces from overrunning the country.

The nation forged a strategic military alliance with Symkaria to resist the invading forces of Baron Strucker. While the country was ultimately spared from the devastation of the Nazi war machine, the Fortunov family took direct notes on authoritarian leadership from Adolf Hitler.

The Modern Age and the Rise of Victor von Doom

After World War II, King Vladimir Fortunov became an increasingly ruthless leader and began actively persecuting the local Romani clans, specifically the Zefiro tribe. The Zefiro tribe was home to Werner von Doom, a highly skilled healer, and Cynthia von Doom, a practitioner of magic. She gave birth to Victor von Doom shortly before her tragic death.

Cynthia von Doom grew desperate from the constant persecution of the Zefiro people and entered into a dark pact with the demon-lord Mephisto to gain power. The resulting magic caused her to accidentally destroy an entire town, and she was subsequently k****** by a soldier of King Vladimir Fortunov.

Years later, King Vladimir Fortunov ordered Werner von Doom to cure the Queen of cancer. Knowing he would fail, von Doom fled into the freezing Alps with young Victor von Doom. Werner died of exposure, leaving his close friend Boris to raise Victor. Driven by vengeance, Victor studied both advanced science and sorcery, eventually returning in a suit of iron armor as Doctor Doom to overthrow and k*** King Vladimir Fortunov.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Synopsis Confirms Everything Fans Feared About Doctor Doom

Doctor Doom immediately ended the persecution of the Zefiro tribe upon taking the throne.

The era of the reign of Doctor Doom

Early in the reign of Doctor Doom, the monarch constructed a weapon of mass destruction to intimidate and successfully annex Rotruvia, a neighboring country that controlled 94% of the global export of Molynite.

The Avengers intervened against the warnings of the Asgardian god Heimdall. Although the Avengers destroyed the weapon, a chemical radiation backup destroyed all Molynite in the region, forcing Rotruvia to accept Doctor Doom's annexation terms anyway. Later, Doctor Doom attempted to marry Princess Lenka of Symkaria to secure her magical potential, but Silver Sable, Spider-Man, and Doctor Strange thwarted this plan.

Throughout Doctor Doom's reign, the nation remained largely protected from international economic downturns, relying on his high-technology and robotics patents as its primary export. Security was strictly maintained by automated Servo-Guards and Doombots.

Political Chaos: From Doomwar to Failed Democracy

During the catastrophic global conflict known as the Doomwar, the nation entered a brutal war with the Kingdom of Wakanda after Black Panther and Storm rejected an alliance, leading Doctor Doom to invade Wakanda to steal its Vibranium. Years later, following the restoration of the Multiverse, Doctor Doom experienced a change of heart, had his facial features restored, and abdicated the throne. He placed General Karadick in charge to transition the state into a democracy, but the country immediately devolved into a bloody civil war between two ruthless factions:

Doom's Children: Led by Octavio von Bardas to protect the original legacy of Doctor Doom

The New Prosperity Alliance: A radical group promoting the complete abolition of the laws of Doctor Doom.

The United States military placed the nation under temporary protection via War Machine. Soon after, the international criminal Lucia von Bardas returned to rebuild the infrastructure, but she used her position to launch an attack on the Smithsonian. The young hero Ironheart intervened, defeated Lucia von Bardas, and briefly declared herself the monarch of the country to restore order before abdicating to allow free elections.

The democratic experiment completely failed, and a tyrannical President for Life took control. A resistance leader named Zora Vukovic successfully infiltrated Castle Doom to beg a secluded Doctor Doom to return. Inspired by the words of Zora Vukovic, Doctor Doom donned his armor once again to depose the despotic forces.

The exact borders of the nation have shifted across various historical accounts.
