Avengers: Doomsday already had enough cinematic ammunition to make theaters feel like the safest place to be during a multiversal collapse. Robert Downey Jr. returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Doctor Doom, the Russo brothers back in the director's chairs. As if not enough, there is a collision involving the Avengers, Wakandans, Fantastic Four, and Fox-era X-Men had fans counting down to December 18, 2026.

Now, Infinity Vision has entered the chat, giving the blockbuster's IMAX experience a brand-new mystery to solve.

Infinity Vision is Disney's new premium large format certification, which is a very elegant way of saying, 'Fine, we will build our own giant screen.' The label requires theaters to offer screens at least 50 feet wide, laser projection, and Dolby 7.1 surround sound. It is essentially Disney assembling its own Avengers team of theatrical hardware.

The timing, naturally, has all the subtlety of Doctor Doom stopping Thor's hammer with one hand. Disney reportedly created the certification after IMAX screens were tied up with Warner Bros.' Dune: Part Three, leaving both films to battle for audiences on December 18, 2026. The multiverse has never looked so much like a scheduling dispute.

Infinity Vision will not copy IMAX's expanded aspect ratios or make the picture taller for audiences. Instead, Disney is placing its wager on technical standards and sheer scale, with more than 7,500 theaters reportedly applying and as many as 5,500 screens potentially qualifying worldwide.

With Dune: Part Three and Avengers: Doomsday turning the theatrical experience into a full-blown IMAX versus Infinity Vision showdown, fans may reasonably wonder whether they can try Disney's new format before committing to it.

If you want to try Infinity Vision before Avengers: Doomsday arrives, Avengers: Endgame Encore is Disney's official test drive. The special re-release begins on September 25, 2026, nearly three months before Doctor Doom brings the multiverse crashing into theaters. Tickets went on sale July 20 alongside advance Avengers: Doomsday bookings, so the experiment can begin early.

The Encore edition also brings seven extra minutes, a Russo brothers introduction, and an expanded ending designed to lead into Avengers: Doomsday. While an IMAX executive has dismissed Infinity Vision as little more than a marketing play, audiences can make their own call before December. If Infinity Vision delivers, Disney may have found its answer to the IMAX-sized question.
