For longtime Tribeca followers, the festival has always had a knack for turning small films into lasting conversation pieces. From quirky indie discoveries that found devoted audiences years later to boundary-pushing shorts that packed more punch than some feature films, Tribeca has built its reputation on celebrating bold storytelling. As the festival marks its 25th anniversary in 2026, one of the most intriguing short selections is DISC, a 13-minute romantic comedy that promises equal parts awkwardness, humor, and emotional vulnerability.

Sometimes the most memorable festival shorts begin with a premise that sounds almost too absurd to work. Yet those are often the films that leave audiences laughing all the way out of the theater. Could DISC be one of those unexpected gems?

What is DISC about?

At first glance, DISC presents itself as a straightforward romantic comedy. The official synopsis follows a man and woman who wake up after a one-night stand during a work conference. What should have been a fleeting encounter quickly spirals into an unforeseen crisis just as a career-defining presentation looms over the morning ahead.

The film's playful tagline describes it as "the story of a hookup gone too far up," hinting at the outrageous predicament at the center of the narrative. Rather than relying solely on shock value, the short appears to use its bizarre setup as a vehicle for exploring something deeper. As the two near-strangers scramble to solve their increasingly uncomfortable problem, they are forced to confront the fragile connection that has unexpectedly formed between them.

The premise alone is enough to spark curiosity, but festival veterans know that a sharp cast can elevate even the wildest concept into something unforgettable.

Who stars in DISC?

The short keeps its ensemble intentionally small, placing the focus squarely on its central duo:

Victoria Ratermanis: Ratermanis serves as both co-writer and lead actor. She plays one half of the unlucky pair whose morning takes a dramatic turn after a conference hookup.

Jim Cummings: Known in independent film circles for acclaimed projects such as Thunder Road and The Beta Test, Cummings stars opposite Ratermanis as the other participant in the increasingly chaotic situation.

Their chemistry appears to be the driving force behind the film. In just 13 minutes, writer Blake Rice and co-writer Victoria Ratermanis seem determined to transform a cringe-inducing morning-after scenario into a surprisingly human story about intimacy, embarrassment, and unexpected chemistry. Behind the camera, Blake Winston Rice directs and co-produces the short while Kevin Garrett provides the music.

Of course, no Tribeca title is complete without its festival debut, and DISC already has several screenings lined up.

With a delightfully strange premise, proven indie talent, and the kind of comedic setup that thrives in a festival crowd, DISC has all the ingredients of a breakout short discovery.
