The upcoming John Wick spinoff movie centers on the blind assassin Caine, who will be played by Donnie Yen, best known for his roles in the Ip Man film series, Fist of Fury (1995), and more. The film, directed by Yen himself, picks up where John Wick: Chapter 4 left off, with Caine finally freed from his obligations to the High Table and reunited with his daughter, Mia.

The story will focus on how his past decisions have created problems for him, especially after the post-credits scene where Akira seeks revenge against him. Rina Sawayama is also expected to return as the daughter of Koji, whom Caine killed at the Osaka Continental, continuing her storyline in the movie from John Wick: Chapter 4.

Recently, John Wick boss Chad Stahelski shared with The Hollywood Reporter that Keanu Reeves’ character would not be accompanying the blind assassin on his solo spin-off journey. Yen's expansion of the universe will largely remain an ode to kung fu movies, he stressed.

"If John Wick 1 was about Charles Bronson and Lee Marvin, this is about Chow Yun-fat, John Woo, and Wong Kar-wai. So I think that one is a little easier to get it across to audiences because it’s in a sub-genre of what we love," Stahelski told the outlet.

Caine juggles love, responsibility, and sacrifice as he walks the tightrope of consequences in the fatal universe, which sets him up to be a new kind of action hero. With Yen's legendary expertise on action films, expectations for the spin-off have risen manifold as its release window nears.

Caine release date and production details

The Lionsgate project does not yet have an official release date, but reports suggest filming began in Hong Kong and the movie could be released around late 2026. While the main John Wick films focus heavily on gun-fu action, Caine will draw inspiration from traditional Hong Kong kung-fu movies, which showcase Donnie Yen's iconic martial arts skills to offer a never-before-seen manner of action storytelling for the franchise.
