She explained to Entertainment Tonight that the transformation was the first thing that came to mind after learning she would reprise the character in Avengers: Doomsday. Romijn explained that her immediate reaction was to discuss how the transformation would work this time around, adding that the new approach is "a slightly different take." Even so, she said she could not wait to return to the role, noting that she now approaches Mystique with much more ownership than she did earlier in her career after overcoming the impostor syndrome she once felt.

With the makeup question settled, fans can now look forward to seeing one of the original X-Men return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Mystique's return brings one of the original X-Men full circle

Rebecca Romijn first rose to prominence as a fashion model in the early 1990s before making a seamless transition into acting. Her breakout performance came in 2000's X-Men, where she portrayed Mystique, reprising the shape-shifting mutant in X2 (2003) and X-Men: The Last Stand (2006). The role became one of the defining performances of Fox's original X-Men franchise, thanks in no small part to the hours-long blue makeup and prosthetics required for every shoot.

Since then, Rebecca Romijn has built a diverse career with roles in films such as Femme Fatale, The Punisher and Rollerball, while also becoming a familiar face on television through series including Ugly Betty, The Librarians, Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Marvel's announcement that she will reprise Mystique in Avengers: Doomsday marks a long-awaited homecoming for both the actress and the character, making her return one of the film's most exciting nostalgic moments for longtime X-Men fans.

For fans who grew up watching the original mutant team, seeing Romijn slip back into Mystique's blue skin is more than just another multiverse cameo, it is a celebration of a character who helped define superhero cinema long before the MCU existed. Her return also serves as a nostalgic bridge between Marvel's cinematic past and its ambitious multiverse future.
