“Went to the Woods” - Alden Ehrenreich Reveals How He Saved His Iconic ‘Hail, Caesar!’ Scene With Ralph Fiennes

Alden Ehrenreich has revealed that he saved his famous Hail, Caesar! scene with Ralph Fiennes by spending an entire day alone in the woods. The actor made the admission during a recent podcast conversation about his career. His plan involved a looming birthday and a scene that kept making him laugh. Nobody expected a tree-filled solution to a comedy problem, least of all the cast.
While most actors rehearse in a mirror or a trailer, Ehrenreich picked a forest, and the trees apparently gave excellent notes.

The fix, according to Alden Ehrenreich, was a full day alone in the woods the day before his 25th birthday, spent working until the scene in Hail, Caesar! mattered so much to him that nothing about it could be funny. He had rehearsed on a Friday and could not get through the scene without laughing, so he used the break before shooting to prepare on his own. The scene pairs his cowboy actor Hobie Doyle with Ralph Fiennes as a refined director, and it demanded perfect seriousness.
“I just went to the woods and just spent all day making it matter so much to me,” Ehrenreich told the Happy Sad Confused podcast.
He then added, “And then we shot for a day and a half and it was just like I’m not I’m not going to it’s not going to be like cut.”

Ehrenreich said on Happy Sad Confused that Fiennes left the Friday rehearsal, and director Joel Coen then told him not to worry because the editors could cut around it. Ehrenreich refused, partly because every other cast member was an A-list movie star while he considered himself a nobody. He had spent the weeks before the shoot working with a friend he prepares everything with, and he had just come off Warren Beatty’s demanding prep process. He calls Fiennes the best actor he has ever worked with, and even Fiennes broke during his final close-up.
Ehrenreich now keeps a straight face on cue, but an earlier audition showed what happens when preparation goes missing entirely.
Alden Ehrenreich recalls his unprepared Spider-Man audition
Alden Ehrenreich told Happy Sad Confused that he went up for Spider-Man, the role that eventually belonged to Andrew Garfield, and the two crossed paths in the doorway, one walking in as the other walked out. Reports at the time placed Ehrenreich among the final two or three contenders for Peter Parker, so the room was not exactly a lost cause. The trouble was the homework. He arrived without his lines memorized, only to find a full set and a dinner scene with ten actors who were all off book.

Ehrenreich added that his heart was not fully in it either. He did not want to sign his life away, and the story looked like a repeat of earlier Spider-Man films. He still calls Garfield one of the best actors of their generation and believes Garfield would have won the part anyway. Spider-Man met an actor with blank pages, while the Hail, Caesar! scene met one who carried his homework into the woods.
