Some movies arrive with instant acclaim, while others need years to find the audience that understands them. Practical Magic belongs firmly in the second category. What initially seemed like an unusual blend of romance, comedy, supernatural drama, and darker themes eventually became one of the most cherished witchy movies of its generation. Today, the 1998 film starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman is celebrated for its sisterhood, eccentric humor, autumnal atmosphere, and unapologetically female perspective.

Its journey from critical disappointment to cult favorite has also made the film’s upcoming sequel feel like the payoff to decades of fan devotion.

When Practical Magic arrived in theaters, its ambitious mix of genres did not sit comfortably with critics. The film opened at No. 1 but struggled to justify its sizable budget, while reviews often took issue with its tonal shifts. Yet those same qualities eventually became part of what audiences loved most about the movie. Speaking on the SmartLess podcast while discussing Practical Magic, Bullock recalled just how brutal the initial response was.

“We were eviscerated. We were by the critics. It was how many women do you in a film? You know how many tones do you need in a film? Comedy and drama and magic,” she said.

The criticism, according to Sandra Bullock on the SmartLess podcast, did little to erase the connection viewers eventually developed with the Owens sisters. Through home viewing, streaming, social media, and annual Halloween rewatches, Practical Magic gradually became a multigenerational favorite celebrated for its warmth, female friendships, memorable performances, and wonderfully unconventional tone.

That renewed affection also helped bring Bullock back into the spotlight for another reason.

Sandra Bullock’s Instagram debut was driven by a serious fight against scammers

Sandra Bullock joined Instagram in April for a reason far beyond promoting Practical Magic 2. The Oscar-winning actress told SmartLess, via PEOPLE, that she created the account after scammers began using her name and likeness to deceive people and steal money.

“About a year and a half ago, I had to because there were people that were using my name and likeness to scam money out of people,” Bullock explained.

She said the problem became particularly disturbing when her sister began hearing from victims who believed they had paid thousands of dollars to Bullock. Sandra Bullock had never been interested in maintaining an active social media presence, but the impersonation scams forced her to establish an official account so fans could distinguish her from fraudulent profiles. While many of her posts have since focused on Practical Magic 2, she has made it clear that protecting potential victims remains the primary reason she joined.

The transformation of Practical Magic demonstrates how audiences can completely rewrite a movie’s legacy. What critics once viewed as an unfocused genre experiment has become a celebration of sisterhood, friendship, romance, magic, and finding your people. With Bullock and Kidman returning for Practical Magic 2, the film’s long-awaited second chapter arrives after years of fans proving that sometimes a movie simply needs time to find its magic.
