LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - MAY 11: Inde Navarrette at the screening of Obsession at the Hollywood Legion Theater on May 11, 2026

Inde Navarrette has claimed that Gen Z is actively demanding authentic cinema that respects their intelligence, and that viewers are completely exhausted by overt ads. As Hollywood increasingly relies on shared universes, recognizable IP, and heavy corporate backing, a growing cultural fatigue is quietly reshaping what younger audiences expect from the silver screen.

For a generation raised on a relentless stream of digital content and targeted marketing, the hunger for genuine, unfiltered storytelling has never been stronger. Now, speaking out on the shifting tides of entertainment, Obsession star Inde Navarrette is shedding light on this generational shift.

Following the explosive box office success of her breakout hit, Obsession star Inde Navarrette recently stopped by The Kyle Buchanan Show to share her perspective on how Hollywood can maintain Gen Z interest in theatrical moviegoing, arguing that young audiences want more than just original storytelling - they want assurance that they will not be fed corporate filler on the big screen.

“Gen Z just wants to go to something that they don’t feel like they’re being sold,” Navarrette said.

“We don’t want to be sold. We want original stories,” she added.

She explained that audiences are growing fatigued by the constant presence of in-movie advertisements and overt product placement. She acknowledged that while memorable commercials from brands like State Farm and Aflac are part of their upbringing, viewers ultimately prefer not to be actively sold to in theaters.

Furthermore, Navarrette emphasized on The Kyle Buchanan Show that coming of age in a digital era has not diminished the generation's desire for genuine human connection and emotion. She expressed pride that Obsession successfully delivered those core human experiences, reiterating that young moviegoers are actively craving originality and emotional resonance on the big screen.

“You’re Still Gonna Get Told No” — Inde Navarrette Learns Hollywood Rejection Still Stings After ‘Obsession’ With ‘Heat 2'

Interestingly, there is a report by Variety on a Fandango study that has some semblance to what Navarrette said.

A detailed study on the moviegoing habits of Gen Z

Making a callback to Rebecca Rubin's article on Fandango's study, Zack Sharf has written for Variety saying Hollywood would be wise to heed Inde Navarrette's advice, given data highlighting the demographic's purchasing power. The Fandango study cited by Variety earlier this year crowned Gen Z as the most active theatrical moviegoing demographic. The research revealed that 87% of Gen Zers and 82% of millennials attended at least one theatrical screening over twelve months, outpacing Gen X at 70% and baby boomers at 58%.

Furthermore, Gen Z and millennials frequent theaters more often, averaging roughly seven visits annually compared to Gen X's 6.1 and baby boomers' 5.7. The findings also highlighted that Gen Z allocates more spending per trip toward concessions and premium formats like IMAX. So, if the top studios of Hollywood were to listen to Navarrette, they would tap into the full potential of a vast market waiting for a shift.
