Director Ava DuVernay is urging action against the decline of democracy at the screening of her latest documentary, 14th. Movies have always been a great way to talk about real-world issues, but every once in a while, a filmmaker uses the spotlight to send a message that goes way beyond entertainment. Instead of just celebrating a normal movie premiere, one visionary director recently stopped the room in its tracks to deliver a passionate wake-up call about where the country is headed.
Ava DuVernay made her powerful point front and center at the debut of her brand-new documentary, 14th.
Ava DuVernay sounds the alarm on democratic decline
Ava DuVernay closed out the 2026 New York Film Festival with the world premiere of 14th, her new Netflix documentary centering on the U.S. Constitution's 14th Amendment. Appearing alongside documentary participants Stacey Abrams and Sherrilyn Ifill at the screening, DuVernay delivered an unvarnished message to the audience: the threat to the future of American democracy is not a distant possibility, but an ongoing reality - and the time to fight back is now.
That urgent philosophy was reflected during her introduction of the documentary, which she revealed had been finalized just two weeks prior to the premiere to ensure maximum contemporary relevance, as she used the platform to sound a definitive alarm.
“The erosion of democracy doesn’t announce itself. It happens one day at a time and one exception at a time,” she said.
“Maybe the most dangerous thing about losing democracy is you can live your ordinary life while it’s happening. We need to fight, and I hope you come out of this film wanting to fight hard,” added DuVernay.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, DuVernay explained that her primary goal with the project was not to offer comforting reassurances or instill a sense of passive hope. Instead, the director emphasized that she wanted viewers to walk away feeling ignited and determined. Noting that her objective was to stir up a fighting spirit in the audience, she added that the ultimate outcome remains to be seen.
While the subject matter might initially sound like a textbook history lesson, the film delivers a visceral and timely exploration.
What is Ava DuVernay’s 14th about?
Ava DuVernay’s 14th examines how the post-Civil War Reconstruction amendments - the 13th, 14th, and 15th - embody America's core democratic ideals, while offering a harrowing look at historical and modern efforts to dismantle them. Tracing attacks on the 14th Amendment from the Reconstruction era all the way through the political fallout of the January 6, 2021 Capitol riots, current immigration raids, and mass deportations, the documentary also highlights efforts by Donald Trump and other Republican leaders to restrict or completely end its constitutional guarantee of birthright citizenship.

Historians, legal experts, and politicians, including Sherrilyn Ifill, Stacey Abrams, David Blight, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, have provided their expert commentary for the documentary. Even though Netflix will not release 14th until after the 2026 midterm elections, it is scheduled for a theatrical run starting on November 27 and a streaming premiere on December 4, 2026.
