Hollywood loves to talk about giving performers a voice, but Jessica Williams knows the real power is in deciding whether that voice gets heard. The Shrinking star recently opened up about the people who shape which performances and storylines make it to the screen, while crediting creator Bill Lawrence for giving her a genuine say in her character’s journey.
And for Williams, having someone like Lawrence in her corner proves why those allies matter when the people at the top are deciding whose voice gets heard.

Speaking at THR x Apple TV’s Leading the Narrative: The Women of Apple TV event in Los Angeles, Jessica Williams reflected on the reality of working in an industry where major creative decisions can still be controlled by a relatively narrow group of people. While discussing her experience on Shrinking, she praised creator Bill Lawrence for giving her meaningful input into her character’s storylines, rather than simply handing her a finished script and expecting her to follow it.
“For better or for worse, the white dudes at the top are kind of making decisions about what performances make it. We need allies.” Williams said to The Hollywood Reporter.

Williams’ recent revelation to The Hollywood Reporter comes as Shrinking continues to prove why having that creative trust matters. Shrinking broke out as both a critical and commercial hit in Season 1, earning a 91% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes and two Primetime Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Lead Actor for Jason Segel and Outstanding Supporting Actress for Williams.
Meanwhile, after three seasons of grief, chaos, and emotional wreckage, Shrinking is about to hit the reset button in its wildest move yet.
Is Shrinking season 4 coming?
Shrinking is officially returning for Season 4, but it won’t simply pick up where Season 3 left off. Bill Lawrence has confirmed that the original three-season plan for Jimmy’s grief story is complete, with Season 4 bringing a major time jump and a brand-new narrative while keeping the beloved core cast intact. Karen Gillan is also set to join the next chapter, adding another fresh face to a series that is clearly ready to shake up its formula.

That reset comes after Season 3 scattered almost everyone in different directions. Alice left for college, Sean moved out, Liz and Derek headed to Spain, Gaby got engaged, Brian stepped into fatherhood, and Paul moved to Connecticut to be closer to his daughter and new wife. Jimmy also finally began moving forward, starting a new relationship with Cobie Smulders’ character.

Meanwhile, the returning ensemble includes Jason Segel, Harrison Ford, Jessica Williams, Luke Tennie, Michael Urie, Lukita Maxwell, Christa Miller and Ted McGinley. Season 3 also featured Jeff Daniels, Michael J. Fox, Sherry Cola, Isabella Gomez, Lisa Gilroy and Candice Bergen, with the next season expected to build on the radically changed lives of its characters.
Jessica Williams’ comments make one thing clear- when performers get a real voice in the room, the characters can become more than what was written on the page, and Shrinking is proving exactly why that matters.
