People fall in love at first sight, but for Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger, it was frenemies at first sight. Today, the two action legends share a friendship built on decades of Hollywood history, but their relationship was once defined by fierce competition, bruised egos, and an unspoken determination to outdo one another.

During the 1980s and 1990s, Stallone and Schwarzenegger competed over everything from box-office success to salaries, physiques, and the kinds of action heroes audiences loved most. Stallone has now offered another glimpse into the rivalry that helped define an era of action cinema.

And his latest confession suggests that even landing the roles they wanted was part of the competition.

Sylvester Stallone says he and Arnold Schwarzenegger were destined to be rivals from day one

During a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, Sylvester Stallone recalled his first impressions of Arnold Schwarzenegger, describing their relationship as competitive from the very beginning.

“First time I laid eyes on Arnold, and first time he laid eyes on me, we knew we were gonna be frenemies forever,” he said. Stallone added that they clashed frequently but also used each other as motivation, admitting that he rarely viewed other actors as direct competition in the same way.

When asked which of Schwarzenegger’s roles he wished he had landed, Stallone delivered a blunt answer: “All of his.”

He then joked that Schwarzenegger was naturally suited to playing the Terminator, while his own crooked mouth made him look like someone who had “fell off the experimental table.”

Their competition, however, was not always so lighthearted. Schwarzenegger, too, had that same competitive bone in his body, and he was just as determined to outdo Stallone, turning their Hollywood rivalry into a battle where neither star wanted to come second.

Arnold Schwarzenegger once took a $30 million role to outdo Sylvester Stallone

Arnold Schwarzenegger previously revealed on 2 Bears, 1 Cave this year that he accepted the role of Mr. Freeze in Batman & Robin despite initially having little interest in playing the villain. The reported $30 million payday ultimately persuaded him, but there was another motivation: he wanted to finally out-earn Sylvester Stallone, who had repeatedly secured bigger salaries.

"I didn’t want to play the villain. They said, ‘$25 million is petty cash, what’s the matter with you guys?,’” he said.

The rivalry also produced a famous Hollywood prank. Schwarzenegger once pretended to be interested in Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot, prompting Stallone to pursue the role himself. Stallone later regretted taking the comedy, calling it one of his worst career decisions.

Their competitive years are now part of Hollywood lore, but both actors have since turned their old feud into friendship, even sharing the screen in films such as The Expendables and Escape Plan. What began as a clash of action-movie titans ultimately became one of Hollywood’s most entertaining bromances.
