'Wasted on me' - 'Kingsman' Actor Taron Egerton Has Strong Opinions Against His James Bond Role

Cinema rarely gives birth to such cultural icons who end up ruling generations with a martini shaken not stirred. James Bond is an evergreen institution of style, sophistication, charm, wit, and action; in other words, if there is one character almost every actor dreams of playing, it is 007. From Sean Connery's debonair strut to Daniel Craig's rough and ragged emotional tempest, the legendary spy has evolved with every actor who has slipped into the tuxedo, each one of them redefining what it is to be 007. As for who is to win the baton next, Kingsman: The Golden Circle's ever-charismatic Taron Egerton, in a shocking turn of events, might not compete at all.

Why has the actor revealed his strong opinions on whether he might one day take down bad guys as MI6's next agent?

Taron Egerton might not throw his hat in the ring for the role of the next James Bond as Amazon MGM Studios continue their search for Daniel Craig's ultimate successor. In a recent interview with Collider, the actor reflected on his suitability for the role, which, despite having ample on-screen spy experience, seems to have fallen short in his eyes. Egerton said he would be "too messy" for the role. He further elaborated, adding how the role might be better suited to younger actors who are looking to establish themselves in the industry. As for him, he said, "I think it would be wasted on me, probably." Though Egerton's candor underscores humility, he is not averse to commercial roles.

For Egerton, James Bond is more of an impossible standard than a dream role. He further dished on the responsibility and toll a role of 007's stature would add to the actor's life. While making it clear he has not been approached by Amazon for the role, the She Rides Shotgun actor said he would not be opposed to commercial movies that speak to him creatively; however, a role like James Bond is too big an undertaking for him. And the 35-year-old Welsh actor knows himself and the character well enough to reflect on it.

What is going on with James Bond at present?

Following Daniel Craig's tenure as the famous spy, Amazon MGM Studios is still on the hunt for the next James Bond successor. However, Variety previously reported, Dune director has been confirmed for the upcoming Bond movie. Meanwhile, younger actors under thirty years of age, such as Tom Holland, Jacob Elordi, Harris Dickinson, and the like, are in the longlist for the iconic role. Though there is not much information available about the new Bond movie, a reported 2028 release window has been confirmed.

In the past, Sean Connery and Roger Moore delivered urbane, wisecracking Bonds while Timothy Dalton and Daniel Craig went darker, more psychologically nuanced, and Pierce Brosnan teetered between charm and camp. Though Taron Egerton, a veteran action hero, ostensibly fits more squarely into the brutal realism of a reinvented Bond universe, he removes himself from the trademark poise the world reserves for 007 as he looks forward to narratives where he would not be miscast.
