Sam Altman has admitted that seeing Andrew Garfield portray him in Artificial was “very strange,” especially after spotting the actor filming outside his own home. Biopics can already create an uncanny distance between a real person and the character built from their life, but that distance gets stranger when the subject is still young, active and shaping the very story being dramatized. At 41, Altman is not looking back from retirement either.
That makes Artificial an unusually surreal kind of Hollywood mirror. Altman is watching someone interpret a version of himself while he remains firmly inside the ongoing story, with enough proximity to the events to have opinions about what made it onto the screen.
Sam Altman saw Andrew Garfield become him
Sam Altman discussed Andrew Garfield’s performance in Artificial during a Vanity Fair interview, where the conversation moved through everything from OpenAI and AI safety to the strange experience of becoming a cinematic character. The strangest part for Altman happened before he even realized what he was seeing. He was walking near his home to get coffee when he noticed cameras and a man dressed almost exactly like him, complete with the same backpack. It turned out to be Garfield.
“He did walk like me,” Altman says.
“It is a strange thing to see someone that has nailed your kind of quirky mannerisms.”

Vanity Fair also reported that the two men never actually spoke beyond that brief wave. When asked whether he or anyone acting on his behalf had contacted Amazon about the film after the studio abandoned distribution, Altman said no. Artificial, directed by Luca Guadagnino, dramatizes the chaotic period surrounding Altman’s 2023 removal and return as OpenAI CEO, with Garfield playing the tech executive. Neon acquired the film after Amazon MGM Studios dropped its planned release, and it is scheduled to arrive in theaters on Christmas Day.
For Garfield, the experience had its own unsettling edge. The actor has said he never met Altman and instead built the performance through research, interviews and publicly available material. He has also described the role as psychologically difficult, eventually admitting that his reaction after playing Altman was essentially relief that the experience was over.
Sam Altman is still living through the story Artificial depicts
That strange collision between biography and real life becomes even more striking because Sam Altman is not simply watching history being recreated. He is still actively creating the next chapter. Artificial looks back at OpenAI’s internal upheaval, but Altman remains at the center of the company whose technology has continued to reshape the public conversation around AI.

Speaking to Vanity Fair, Altman described the current AI moment as an extraordinary period for both capability and risk. He argued that OpenAI has been preparing for this acceleration for roughly a decade, saying the company had watched exponential progress unfold while wondering why the wider world had not yet seen it in the same way. His point captures the peculiar position he occupies: the subject of a biopic while still helping determine what the next chapter of the real story looks like.
Artificial therefore arrives with an unusual built-in tension. Garfield can play a version of Sam Altman, but the real Altman is still out there, watching, responding and building the technology that made the character possible in the first place.
