Whenever there is a bestseller on The New York Times, production houses take their checkbooks and start to race down the street in their fancy suits just to lock in the rights before anyone else. It is a clever way to ensure profits even before production begins. The fans of the book and the author are already a potential audience base, plus if they hitch a star big enough to headline the project, they are already looking at multi-million revenue, without having to worry about an original script.
This paradigm has made Hollywood billions, and it seems Warner Bros. wants to become the latest beneficiary of this arrangement. It has reportedly landed the rights to Allen Levi’s Theo of Golden, with Tom Hanks as the lead.
Warner Bros. lands Theo of Golden with Tom Hanks attached
Allen Levi's breakthrough book Theo of Golden, a bestseller that has made the first-time author a publishing phenomenon with just the might of favorable word-of-mouth as he approaches 70, is being negotiated for the feature film rights by Warner Bros. Pictures. Tom Hanks is in negotiations to play the titular role, and Deadline reports that the deal is being papered.
The story takes place in the made-up town of Golden, where a man named Theo shows up and buys pencil drawings of the people who are on display at a coffee shop. He brings them back to each subject, and these visits uncover relationships and experiences that help Theo reconcile with his past sorrow.

Theo of Golden began its literary journey in the most humble manner imaginable. It was self-published in 2023 with minimal publicity or promotion by a first-time writer who switched from practicing law to creating music from his Georgian island. With the help of his niece Aron Ritchie's tireless efforts to raise the book's profile, the book gradually gained popularity through word-of-mouth, per Deadline.
The book did not just find bestseller status with these efforts; it found the best possible creative team for its movie adaptation.
The creative team behind the adaptation
The author, Allen Levi, will serve as executive producer, with Gil Netter, Gary Goetzman, and Hanks serving as producers. Marley & Me, The Blind Side, Life of Pi, Just Mercy, The Shack, and Water for Elephants are just a few of the independently produced book-to-film adaptations that Netter is most renowned for. Warner Bros. has Jesse Ehrman and Sheila Walcott in charge of the project. Ian Dalrymple, a literary affairs executive, is credited by the team with bringing the proposal to the studio's attention.

Goetzman and Hanks, Playtone partners, completed Greyhound 2, which is directed by Aaron Schneider and stars Hanks. The Comebacker, directed by Marielle Heller, is the next project the Playtone partners are working on. In that movie, Hanks plays the New York Mets' pitching instructor. Callum Turner will portray the young pitcher, whose life and career are destroyed when he gets hit by a batted ball after making a pitch. Although some formalities still remain, the deal seems as good as done.
