Chuck Lorre built an empire on multi-camera sitcoms, with Two and a Half Men and The Big Bang Theory sharing the same DNA: sharp dialogue, flawed but lovable characters, and a formula that turned ordinary people into cultural phenomena. Lorre's career spans decades of hit shows, from Dharma & Greg to Mom

But The Big Bang Theory stands out as his crowning achievement essentially the Friends for nerds, a show that ran 12 seasons and made its cast household names. Yet the sitcom almost did not happen at all.

And Lorre recently revealed just how rough the beginning really was.

Chuck Lorre admits The Big Bang Theory nearly failed its first test

Imagine Sheldon Cooper examining a sitcom script and delivering a merciless assessment. Chuck Lorre essentially did that to his own work. Discussing his memoir Sitcom with Extra's Derek Hough, Lorre remembered how the show's earliest version failed to impress.

“The first pilot we shot, it  failed,” he admitted.

“The script stunk.” he added.

Quite a verdict from the man who would eventually turn a group of Pasadena nerds into global sitcom royalty. Somewhere, Sheldon is presumably preparing a peer-reviewed paper titled I Told You So. CBS, however, offered an unusual lifeline. Executives asked whether Lorre and his collaborators would attempt another pilot, despite struggling to articulate precisely what had gone wrong.

The team regrouped for roughly a year, rebuilt the material, and filmed another version. This time, the ingredients clicked. The series premiered in 2007 and eventually ran until 2019, making Jim Parsons, Johnny Galecki, Kaley Cuoco, and their costars fixtures of television history.

And the universe that almost failed to launch now has a literal multiverse problem.

Stuart Fails to Save the Universe Season 2 is already in the works

The Big Bang Theory franchise is currently exploring an entirely different scientific disaster through Stuart Fails to Save the Universe. Kevin Sussman reprises comic-shop owner Stuart Bloom, whose accident with a device created by Sheldon and Leonard unleashes a multiverse catastrophe.

Season 1 premiered on HBO Max on July 23, 2026, and concluded September 24 with a fourth-wall-shattering finale. Stuart and his companions discovered a reality resembling a television sitcom, complete with actors playing versions of themselves. HBO Max renewed the series on August 14, just four episodes into its inaugural run.

Writers began developing Season 2 in September, with filming expected to start in early 2027. A premiere date remains unannounced, and the full returning cast has yet to be confirmed. Lorre, Bill Prady, and Zak Penn created the spinoff, blending familiar characters with reality-bending science fiction. Its renewal gives Stuart another chance to survive a catastrophe he accidentally unleashed.
