Mayim Bialik has revealed that watching Chuck Lorre endure his public rift with Charlie Sheen was very difficult for everyone on The Big Bang Theory set. Bialik spent 11 years on the Lorre hit, which gave her a close look at far more than punchlines. A fresh podcast conversation has now pulled that backstage chapter back into the light.

As headlines chased the loudest voice in 2011, a different sitcom set quietly absorbed the damage, and Bialik watched it happen.

How the Two and a Half Men fallout reached The Big Bang Theory set

Mayim Bialik says watching Chuck Lorre go through his public split with Charlie Sheen was painful for the entire The Big Bang Theory family. The trouble began on Two and a Half Men, yet it followed him onto the sitcom he called his safe place.

“I remember those years. It was very, very difficult for us to see him like that," Bialik recalled on Mayim Bialik’s Breakdown podcast.

She then added, “I know a lot of people are like, ‘Serves you right,’ like, ‘You’re a rich producer.’ But there’s a human” side to the story that deserves attention.

The exclusive clip, shared with Entertainment Weekly from an upcoming episode of Mayim Bialik’s Breakdown, began with a question from co-host Jonathan Cohen. Bialik explained that the timing made everything louder, since social media was just taking off and amplified the harshest insults. Today, she joked, such an outburst might earn a shrug. Back then, it landed differently because Sheen came from Hollywood royalty, as the son of Martin Sheen and brother of Emilio Estevez.

Public insults made for a rough chapter, but years later one phone call from Lorre changed the ending.

Why Chuck Lorre asked Charlie Sheen to join Bookie after years apart

Chuck Lorre explained on Dinner’s On Me with Jesse Tyler Ferguson that the anger simply disappeared. After several years of healing, he woke up one day and noticed the rage and hurt were gone. That realization led him to call his Bookie partner, Nick Bakay, with a bold idea, which was that Charlie Sheen should play the celebrity gambler. Bakay asked whether Lorre could really handle it, and the answer came with one condition: that Sheen be sober.

Lorre reached Sheen through an agent, and the actor happily accepted, asking only that his past struggles stay out of the story. Sheen played an exaggerated version of himself, and Lorre directed the episode, making it their first collaboration since the rift. The groundwork had started years earlier, when Sheen publicly asked to make amends in 2013 on X, an offer Lorre did not answer at the time. For The Big Bang Theory cast who watched those painful years up close, the reunion gave the story a far happier ending than the one they remembered.
