The MCU's evolution from the Infinity Saga's cohesive narrative arc to the Multiversal Saga's sprawling complexity demands character development that honors established histories while pushing beloved heroes into unexplored territory. Each Avenger has undergone major transformation across multiple films, creating the challenge of preserving what audiences recognize while finding new directions for familiar characters.

Anthony Russo just revealed the hard part of handling all this evolution and so many heroes in Avengers: Doomsday.

Anthony Russo discussed the challenges of evolving MCU characters during a Q&A session following an Avengers: Endgame Encore screening, as reported by GamesRadar+.

"It's a very difficult part of the process because, I mean, we basically just have to use our own meters because we love the characters, we love the history, we love them in the same way that many fans do," Russo explained. This approach acknowledges their own fandom while accepting responsibility for stewarding these iconic figures forward.

Russo also acknowledged the diversity within Marvel's fanbase, noting that different audiences connect with different character versions and interpretations throughout the franchise's extensive history.

"But the one thing we always like to remind people of, you know, fandom does not speak with a single voice. There's a wide variety of opinion in terms of who responds to which characters and which versions of which characters people respond to" he stated in the Q&A.

The director emphasized balancing respect for established storytelling with the necessity of surprising both creators and audiences through unexpected character developments.

That challenge becomes clearer through the new footage attached to Avengers: Endgame Encore.

The theatrical re-release adds four new scenes connecting Avengers: Endgame with the Avengers: Doomsday. The first extends Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter's ending, with Loki arriving at their home in his TVA attire. The scene deliberately leaves questions surrounding Steve's timeline unanswered.

Another sequence follows Bruce Banner after the events of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Living underground and working on a way to suppress his Hulk transformation, Banner receives an unexpected visit from Doctor Doom, who tells him, “I'm here to collect you.” The footage ends with Hulk's roar and green markings left behind.

The TVA then witnesses incursions spreading across the multiverse, with entire realities being destroyed as the crisis escalates. Finally, Doctor Doom is shown forging his metal mask to the same hammering sound associated with Tony Stark's armor, creating a deliberate visual connection between the two characters, both played by Robert Downey Jr.
