Dragons have always been the ultimate weapons in House of the Dragon, but raw size does not necessarily determine which one is the most terrifying. While Vhagar stands almost uncontested at the top, the battle for the next spot becomes much harder to settle.
Two dragons in particular make the debate fascinating. Vermithor possesses overwhelming size and strength, while Caraxes brings speed, aggression, battle experience, and a reputation for attacking foes far larger than himself. So, which one deserves to be called the most dangerous after Vhagar?

Vermithor, known as the Bronze Fury, is the larger of the two and the second-largest living dragon during the Dance. His enormous frame gives him tremendous physical power, durability, and destructive potential. With decades of experience and a history as King Jaehaerys I's dragon, Vermithor is a formidable force even before taking his rider into account. Caraxes has the strongest claim to being the most dangerous combat dragon, while Vermithor is the more powerful dragon physically.

Caraxes, meanwhile, sacrifices size for agility. The Blood Wyrm's long, serpentine body makes him exceptionally maneuverable, while his ferocious temperament and extensive combat history make him particularly dangerous in aerial battles. His experience fighting alongside Daemon in the Stepstones also gave him an edge that cannot simply be measured in wingspan.
That distinction becomes even more important when considering what awaits in the show's final chapter.
The final season promises more dragons and chaos
Ryan Condal has already confirmed that the fourth season will not simply be about tying ribbons around the surviving threads. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the showrunner teased that new characters, dragons, and locations are still coming.
“We have new characters, new dragons, and new locations all to come, that I think are gonna make it a very worthy final season.”
That promise is especially significant after Season 3, where Tumbleton demonstrated just how devastating dragons can become when loyalty collapses. Ulf the White's betrayal turned the battlefield into carnage, while Aegon's return with Sunfyre further complicated Rhaenyra's increasingly fragile position.

The final season could therefore put even greater emphasis on the differences between dragons like Vermithor and Caraxes. One represents overwhelming force, while the other embodies speed, aggression, and tactical lethality. Ultimately, Vermithor may be the stronger dragon in a pure contest of size and power, but Caraxes has the more convincing case for being the deadlier combatant. His defining achievement is surviving a fight against Vhagar long enough to tear out the larger dragon's throat, even as he suffered fatal injuries himself.
