Universal Pictures has officially crossed the $5 billion mark at the global box office in 2026, becoming the first studio to reach the milestone this year. The haul is the third time Universal has passed $5 billion worldwide, following previous crossings in 2015 and 2017.

The studio is not simply having a good year. It has assembled the kind of release calendar where a Nolan epic, a Nintendo sequel, a Michael Jackson biopic and a low-budget sleeper can all become pieces of the same box-office puzzle.

Universal’s year-to-date haul currently stands at $1.788 billion domestically and $3.218 billion internationally, taking its worldwide total beyond $5 billion. Variety reports that Universal-distributed films have benefited from major releases across the studio’s different labels, with The Odyssey, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Michael, Minions & Monsters and Obsession among the key contributors. The most important piece of that puzzle is Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey.

The Homer adaptation did something that looked unusually ambitious on paper: it turned a roughly 3,000-year-old epic into a premium-format theatrical event. The film has reached $1.68 billion worldwide, making it Universal’s highest-grossing movie ever and pushing past Jurassic World’s previous $1.67 billion studio record. Its IMAX run has been particularly significant, with the format accounting for a huge share of its global haul. 

The number is especially striking because it has not been built around one franchise alone. Universal Pictures, Illumination, DreamWorks Animation and Focus Features have all contributed to a theatrical year that has mixed giant event movies with unexpected breakouts.

Variety reports that the horror-romance has passed $505.6 million worldwide against a reported $750,000 production budget, giving Universal another kind of win alongside its billion-dollar spectacles.

And with several more releases still waiting in the wings, the studio has more opportunities to add to an already extraordinary box-office year.

Crossing $5 billion in September does not mean Universal’s box-office campaign is winding down. The studio still has several major releases coming, giving the milestone room to grow before the calendar flips to 2027. DreamWorks Animation’s Forgotten Island is already in theaters, while Blumhouse and Atomic Monster’s Other Mommy, starring Jessica Chastain, is scheduled for October 9. 

Focus Features will then bring Daisy Edgar-Jones’ Sense & Sensibility on October 16, followed by Elsinore in limited release beginning November 20. The holiday corridor could provide another significant boost. Focker-In-Law, starring Ben Stiller, Robert De Niro and Ariana Grande, is set for November 27, followed by Violent Night 2 on December 4. Robert Eggers’ Werwulf then arrives on December 25, giving Focus Features another prestige horror title to close out the year. 

Universal’s $5 billion achievement therefore says as much about the studio’s portfolio as it does about any individual hit. The Odyssey supplied the giant event movie, Mario brought franchise animation, Michael tapped into music-driven fandom, while Obsession demonstrated that theatrical surprises can still break through.
