The expectations-defying success of Curry Barker’s Obsession has definitely triggered a meteoric rise for the director. Following him, even lead actress Inde Naverrette, who impressed audiences with her formidable performance in the film, and Michael Johnston, who was equally good as the introverted Bear, have gained impressive leverage. Johnston's performance has, in fact, now opened doors to big-budget projects for him, and the most talked-about among them is The Mummy 4.

There have been reports that Michael Johnston is in the early negotiation stages for a key role in the Universal film.

After Obsession became a box office success, Michael Johnston is on the verge of closing his first major role. The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Johnston is in preliminary negotiations to join The Mummy 4. He would join Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, the veterans of the franchise, if the talks go well.

As previously announced, Academy Award winners Rachel Weisz and Brendan Fraser are formally making a comeback for the fourth film in the beloved movie series. Radio Silence’s Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett are directing the film, which will be released on October 15, 2027.

Since Obsession comes from the studio's specialty label, Focus, the move would keep Johnston in the Universal family, per The Hollywood Reporter. Johnston's previous credits also include the television series Teen Wolf, but it was last year's low-budget Curry Barker horror thriller Obsession that became a box office hit, drawing attention to Johnston and the rest of the crew from moviegoers.

As far as his involvement in the project is concerned, there have been some theories as to what key role Michael Johnston might be playing.

Michael Johston's supposed role in The Mummy 4

Universal has revealed that The Mummy 4 will be released 26 years after The Mummy Returns, completely eschewing the contentious 2008 feature The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. Because of that big gap, Alex O'Connell, Rick and Evelyn's now-adult son, needs to be taken care of regarding casting. With Michael Johnston's news of being in talks, it is only natural for the mind to single him out for a possible takeover of the character.

Before Luke Ford assumed Alex's role in Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, which has since been removed from the timeline, Freddie Boath portrayed the role of their eight-year-old son in The Mummy Returns. Fans have previously suggested that Johnston, 30, might take over the role because he is near in age to where a mature Alex O'Connell would be in this timeframe. An official confirmation is still due, and it all depends on how the negotiations go.
