Much like the mysterious curse at the heart of Widow's Bay, the show's inspiration also had an unexpected source. As the creator revealed, the series actually has its roots in a famous sitcom. Widow's Bay quickly caught the attention of audiences with its dark comedy and chilling horror, becoming one of the best shows of the year. Its eerie atmosphere and narrative have earned much praise from both fans and celebrities alike.

While the series explores unsettling themes like sea hags and the Boogeyman, its origins are connected with lighthearted comedy.

Widow's Bay creator Katie Dippold revealed in a conversation with Deadline that the series was originally based on a spec script she had written many years ago. Interestingly, she initially wrote it as a spec script for Parks and Recreation, where she worked as a writer and co-producer. Speaking about the original version, Dippold said it leaned much more heavily into comedy and was considerably funnier than the horror series audiences see today.

“It was more comedic, and I think it gave a good idea of my sense of humor. But I don’t know that I would have watched that show, because I think it could have felt more like a spoof, and as a horror fan, I just wanna be immersed into the island,” she said.

Dippold told Deadline that the setting of Widow's Bay was inspired by a feeling she had been trying to recreate since childhood. She recalled visiting a chaotic, eerie boardwalk in Long Branch, New Jersey, where she felt both fear and excitement. That thrill of being terrified while wanting to go back became the emotional foundation for the show's haunting island atmosphere.

And this inspiration led Dippold to create the series, Widow’s Bay, which is massively praised by notable names in the industry.

Ben Stiller described the show as "excellent," while Jonathan Bailey hailed it as "top-tier television," as per The Hollywood Reporter.
