Twenty-five years after the first Spy Kids film, Daryl Sabara and Alexa PenaVega have proved that the strongest spy gadgets were apparently their children. The former co-stars remain remarkably close, bonding over the joys and chaos of parenthood despite building separate families. That lasting connection feels fitting, considering Sabara and PenaVega grew up together as Juni and Carmen Cortez, spent months on demanding sets that somehow resembled a summer camp filled with costumes, travel, and enough laughter to pass for sibling diplomacy.

The Cortez children may have retired their gadgets, but the sibling operation survived. These days, the newest agents are their children, quietly keeping the friendship classified and wonderfully intact.

Daryl Sabara and Alexa PenaVega swapped spy gadgets for serving trays while volunteering at The Salvation Army's summer camp. Speaking to the Daily Mail during the event, PenaVega reflected on the friendship that has endured since Spy Kids. She explained that their remarkably similar childhoods created a bond few people could truly understand. Some movie sequels fade. This one simply grew up.

"I reach out to her all the time, and be like, 'Hey, I am going through this. Like, did you go through this with your kids?'" Sabara revealed, explaining that PenaVega has become his unofficial parenting hotline. Since she started raising a family years earlier, her answer is usually reassuringly familiar. It turns out the greatest Spy Kids gadget is shared parenting advice.

PenaVega, who shares three children with husband Carlos PenaVega, could not hide her admiration for her former on-screen brother while speaking to The Daily Mail. She described Sabara as 'super dad,' praising the way he balances fatherhood with everything else on his plate. Carmen Cortez may have retired, but she is still cheering Juni Cortez on from the sidelines.

After that revelation, their Spy Kids 25th anniversary reunion feels inevitable, as does seeing just how much both families have grown.

The Cortez siblings' family era

The Cortez children once saved the world before bedtime. These days, Alexa PenaVega is busy raising PenaVega children Ocean, Kingston, and Rio with Carlos PenaVega while honoring the memory of daughter Indy Rex. The couple has built a life around keeping family together, which is rather more impressive than another blockbuster.

Daryl Sabara, meanwhile, has exchanged secret missions for bedtime routines alongside Meghan Trainor. Trainor children Riley, Barry, and Mikey Trainor now headline the household, while Sabara cheerfully embraces the delightful disorder that comes with raising three young children. There are fewer exploding gadgets, but considerably more toys underfoot.

It is rather charming how both former child stars ended up starring in remarkably similar stories. Two busy households, two family-first philosophies, and plenty of little voices filling the background. No wonder parenthood became the unexpected thread that kept their real-life sibling bond happily stitched together after all these years.
