It has been four decades since the iconic movie Transformers: The Movie broke fans’ hearts. Now, the film is all set to return to theaters for another ride filled with both thrills and trauma as it celebrates its 40th anniversary. Although it is adapted from a cartoon series based on a toy line, the movie had a much deeper and darker sci-fi story focused on the Autobots and Decepticons.

And over the years, it has grown into a cult classic among the fandom, which is likely to bring both old and new fans back once again for its theatrical rerelease.

Transformers: The Movie was initially released on August 8, 1986, and is finally returning to theaters in a 4K release planned by Hasbro in association with Fathom Entertainment. And this limited screening is scheduled to run from September 17 through September 21, 2026. So, fans will once again get the chance to relive the movie’s iconic battles and unforgettable moments on the big screen.

During its original release, the movie received mixed reactions, mostly because of its surprisingly dark story. Several major characters were wiped out during the film, and needless to mention that Optimus Prime also could not escape that fate. Unsurprisingly, Hasbro has named this special celebration the Apology Tour.

The event gives fans a chance to grieve, heal, and rewatch the movie together with fellow fans in theaters. What is interesting about the film is its impressive voice cast, including Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime and Frank Welker as Megatron. Orson Welles, Judd Nelson, Eric Idle, and Robert Stack were also part of the cast.

But before witnessing the movie’s thrilling action and music on the big screen once again, one can explore a more recent small-screen Transformers series that has been praised for its deep and character-driven storytelling.

Transformers: Prime is a deep and action-packed series

Transformers: Prime is considered one of the best stories in the Transformers franchise. The three-season animated series focuses on the war between the Autobots and Decepticons after their home planet Cybertron, was destroyed. Unlike many other Transformers shows, it does not hesitate to take a darker and more emotional approach with intense action and character-driven storytelling.

The series also explores the deep and tragic friendship between Optimus Prime and Megatron. As many believe, the show gives more attention to character relationships and emotional moments, and that is the heart of the show. It can be watched ahead of the rerelease of Transformers: The Movie.
