Pixar initially sought Jim Carrey for the role of Buzz Lightyear in Toy Story, but Disney deemed him not famous enough. The character of Buzz Lightyear in Toy Story is an absolute titan of modern animation, but the legendary Space Ranger almost sounded completely different. Before the definitive casting choices were finalized, an incredible production timeline shifted a Hollywood live wire out of the role. The interpretation of how Buzz should sound did not stem from a single audition.
A massive clash of industry timing and explosive box office star power ultimately changed the face of cinema history.

According to David Lavery's Joss Whedon: Conversations, when creative executive Whedon stepped in to refine the script in early 1993, Pixar actively pursued Jim Carrey for the space ranger, Buzz Lightyear. However, Disney executives firmly rejected the choice because they believed the comedian lacked the star power to carry the film.
"Disney put the kibosh on the person they wanted for Buzz Lightyear because he wasn't famous enough, so we couldn't use Jim Carrey," Whedon revealed. The decision quickly became ironic as Hollywood entered 1994.
Jim Carrey experienced an unprecedented explosion of fame following back-to-back box office triumphs like Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask, and Dumb and Dumber. His rapid ascension transformed him into a top-tier celebrity overnight. This sudden stratospheric rise ultimately backfired on the production team.
By the time casting was finalized, Carrey's skyrocketing salary demands made him completely unaffordable for the budget of the animated movie. The studio missed its window, which forced creators to seek out a new voice actor for the character after Jim Carrey was rejected, as mentioned by Whedon in David Lavery's Joss Whedon: Conversations.
With their original choice officially out of reach, producers chose other stars for Buzz Lightyear.
A galaxy of talent expands Buzz Lightyear’s voice legacy in Toy Story world
Over the years, several actors have officially brought the iconic Space Ranger to life across various theatrical movies, spin-offs, and home-video projects. Tim Allen stands as the definitive, original voice of the action figure, portraying the standard English version in Toy Story, Toy Story 2, Toy Story 3, Toy Story 4, and the upcoming Toy Story 5.
He also voiced the character Buzz Lightyear in Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins and made a memorable cameo appearance in Ralph Breaks the Internet. Chris Evans stepped into the cockpit to voice the sci-fi spin-off film Lightyear. In that same cinematic universe, actor James Brolin provided the voice for an older, alternate iteration of the hero who is ultimately revealed to be the true identity of Emperor Zurg.

Javier Fernández-Peña provided the voice for the memorable software malfunction sequence when the space ranger is accidentally switched into his Spanish Mode during Toy Story 3. Teddy Newton voiced a separate miniature Happy Meal toy counterpart known as Mini-Buzz in the Pixar short film Small Fry. While a chaotic casting timeline and early anonymity prevented Jim Carrey from stepping into the boots of Buzz Lightyear, who later became difficult to afford, the role found Tim Allen and opened the door for talented actors.
