While Toy Story 5 introduces audiences to one of the franchise’s most visually ambitious concepts yet, bringing Bonnie’s imagination to life proved far more complicated than it looks. Behind every watercolor backdrop and over-the-top play scenario were numerous alternate versions, many of which never made it into theaters. Now, co-director Kenna Harris is offering a glimpse into just how much experimentation went into creating Bonnie’s world.
As it turns out, the version of Bonnie’s imagination that audiences saw on screen was only one of many Pixar explored behind the scenes.

Speaking to Discussing Film, co-writer and co-director Kenna Harris revealed that conceptualizing Bonnie’s play sequences became one of the most enjoyable parts of making Toy Story 5. Working alongside Pixar veteran Andrew Stanton, Harris set out to reimagine playtime through the eyes of an imaginative eight-year-old girl rather than recreating Andy’s more grounded adventures from previous films. The approach resulted in some of the film’s most memorable moments, including Forky’s bizarre wedding sequence, while several alternate concepts were ultimately left on the cutting room floor.
“There are so many versions of those imagination sequences that didn’t make it into the film.” Harris revealed to Discussing Film.
Meanwhile, Toy Story 5 has wasted little time proving its appeal at the global box office since arriving in theaters on June 19. The sequel reportedly delivered the biggest opening weekend in franchise history, collecting an impressive $312 million worldwide in just three days. In the process, the film not only secured the biggest debut of 2026 but also recovered its reported $250 million production budget almost immediately.
With Toy Story 5 already soaring at the box office, speculation about where the franchise goes next has inevitably begun to pick up steam.
Will there be a Toy Story 6?
While Pixar has yet to officially announce Toy Story 6, the studio appears to be far from finished with Woody, Buzz, and the gang. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, director Andrew Stanton revealed that Pixar already has enough story material mapped out for at least two more films, potentially paving the way for both a sixth and seventh installment. He also suggested that the post-Andy era is being viewed as a Bonnie trilogy, meaning Toy Story 6 could serve as the defining chapter in Bonnie’s journey with the beloved toys.

Given the franchise’s remarkable track record, it is easy to see why Pixar would be eager to continue the story. Since becoming the world’s first fully CGI feature film in 1995, Toy Story has grown into a multi-billion-dollar powerhouse, with Toy Story 3 and Toy Story 4 both crossing the $1 billion mark worldwide. Now, after Toy Story 5 shattered franchise opening-weekend records and delivered the biggest debut of 2026, the prospect of another sequel feels less like a question of if and more like a question of when.
While fans can now watch Bonnie’s colorful imagination come to life in theaters, Harris’ latest comments suggest the version seen on screen is just one of many creative paths Pixar could have taken with Toy Story 5.
