With Toy Story 5 continuing to reveal more about its story, one of the biggest talking points has been Lilypad and what role the character plays in the film. Early reactions to the trailer sparked a lot of speculation as to whether the device would be the main villain of the story. However, the film’s creators have since offered more insight into the rationale behind that choice.
“She is to the toys because they’re understandably intimidated,” Andrew Stanton told Variety. “She’s just the next phase in Bonnie’s life. She’s built like a toy in the sense that she wants to help the kid go forward, but she’s got very different skills and zero experience, whereas Jessie has nothing but experience and is probably unprepared for what to do.”
Stanton further clarified that Lilypad is not a villain. On the other hand, co-director McKenna Harris also revealed that there were discussions within the studio about whether Lilypad should be a villain or not. This creative debate became a key part of shaping how the character would fit into the story’s larger themes around toys, childhood, and technology.
“Lots of people at the studio wanted her to be a villain, and it was so hard to strike a balance because I think we all come in with such loaded emotions towards devices. At the end of the day, it never made sense.” Harris emphasized that the filmmakers wanted those feelings to be anchored in reality.
As more is revealed about Lilypad, the character appears to be shaping a very different kind of challenge for the toys.
What role does Lilypad play in Toy Story 5?
The 5th movie of the franchise brings back beloved toys Buzz Lightyear, Woody (Tom Hanks), Jessie, Rex, Forky, and the rest of the gang. When the story resumes a few years after the fourth movie, a lot has changed. The biggest surprise is how Woody has aged, aside from the additional toys.

Also, Lilypad's character makes an appearance in the newest edition of the movie, making Toy Story 5 relevant to the modern world. Now, 8-year-old Bonnie uses her gadgets to be able to talk to her friends by playing various games online. Meanwhile, Lilypad seemingly becomes the main antagonist of the movie when the toys are struggling against technology.
Taking all these facts into consideration, the character of Lilypad seems to bring a different challenge to the 5th part of Toy Story. She does not fit in the role of a villain in the way other antagonists do. Instead, she brings the idea of modern games that children play in today's world.
