The upcoming Toy Story 5, helmed by two-time Oscar-winning director Andrew Stanton, has added a fresh name to its growing ensemble, with Krys Marshall officially joining the cast, per Deadline. Marshall is best known for playing Nicole Robinson in Paradise and Danielle Poole in For All Mankind.
Before Toy Story, Marshall had previously lent her voice to video games, including Marvel's Avengers. She had also starred in short films such as Lesbian Cops, Raincheck Romance, Doubles, and Soliloquy. Shooting her shot at claiming a spot in the franchise, Marshall had emailed Stanton asking for a role in the upcoming movie, which she ultimately landed.
Stanton's film seeks to combine nostalgic elements with modern tech anxieties. The plot will display how conventional toys struggle to maintain their value during a period where technological advancements dominate children's playtime activities. Deadline's reports indicate that Marshall will provide the voice for a character who plays a grown-up tackling her child's new hobby in the main conflict between toys and technology.
"It’s also pretty heartbreaking that you miss so much in real life because we’re trapped in our phones, and sadly, it’s transferred over to kids. So the story is really beautiful, the duality of these toys that are aging and becoming less interesting to kids, [...] but ultimately, there’s no replacement for human imagination," Marshall said about the movie's themes in an interview with Deadline.
The narrative is layered with greater emotional and cultural depth beyond basic childlike adventures. It introduces themes about technological invasion, self-perception, and transformation voiced by some of Hollywood's biggest, most high-profile A-listers.
