Ever sat through a two-hour movie with suspense, action, or drama, only to find yourself staring at the credits in shock? Not because of a jaw-dropping cliffhanger, but because the ending was just ...meh. No happy or sad ending, no twist, no real emotion—just a flat finish that leaves you thinking why you even bothered. Instead of feeling satisfied, you are left irritated as you walk out.

These movie endings did not just miss the mark but they let down everything the movie built up to.

Sunshine has a very unique and interesting storyline behind it, one that has not been done before. It is a sci-fi that gets you following a group of astronauts on a mission to bring back the fading sun to Earth, and restore humanity. The movie hooks you with its breathtaking visuals and takes you along with the crew with beautiful camera action as they face an intense journey through space.

Sadly, the ending of this movie is remembered by viewers as quite the letdown. Marrit Ingman from The Austin Chronicle even mentioned that this twist "cheapens the sentiment, and the film doesn't recover." Yes, it is clearly not a perfect movie, but it is definitely worth a one-time watch if you are into sci-fi.

Specter

Spectre kicked off with a jaw-dropping visual scene set in Mexico City's vibrant Day of the Dead festival, instantly raising the bar for what is to come. But as the film rolls on, it is clear that keeping up with that initial buzz became a tall order. The big reveal of the movie did not pack a punch, this reveal was that: Christoph Waltz stepped in as the mysterious Franz Oberhauser, who eventually turns out to be the infamous Blofeld. It felt forced and not nearly as deep as fans hoped

Spectre's plot got messily tangled and it took away from the classic punch of James Bond's past films. The movie's pace hit some bumps too. Sure, the action scenes were great but it did not quite pack the suspense and thrill you would expect from a Bond flick.

Remember me

Remember Me starts off with a lot of promise, pulling viewers into this touching drama. In this story, you follow the lives of Tyler (played by Robert Pattinson) and Ally (Emilie de Ravin) as their romance blooms. Tyler's rocky relationship with his father, Charles (Pierce Brosnan) became a main hook point in the film, getting readers rooting for the characters. The movie easily connected with its audience because of its good pace and character work as the story develops. But then, out of nowhere, everything changed with the ending.

It is in the final moments that this film messed up, you are cut to the scene of Tyler in the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, before the 9/11 attacks. Tyler is seen gazing out the window, completely unaware. This sudden shift from a personal story to a national disaster threw out all its earlier potential, leaving a bitter taste that was hard to shake off.

The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King

The Lord of the Rings franchise has one of the most loyal fanbases and is known as a classic. This particular film, The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King did gain a reputation for its grand battles and heartfelt goodbyes. But, in all honestly many fans thought the movie's ending just kept going and going. The ending struggled to end, after tying up all the main storylines, it felt like the film could not quite say goodbye. It lingered around with several endings each spotlighting different characters making their way back to the Shire.

Sure, these scenes wrapped things up but they went on and on leaving viewers waiting for it to end. This drawn-out conclusion left some viewers feeling like the movie's rhythm was a bit off, with the final scenes not matching the fun thrill of earlier moments.

Fight club (chinese cut)

Sadly for China, in 2022 the Chinese release of the classic Fight Club came with a sudden twist that caused an uproar when the film's ending was swapped out for something entirely different. Instead of the iconic scene where Edward Norton's character and Marla, played by Helena Bonham Carter, hold hands as buildings crumble around them, viewers were greeted with a text screen. It read: "The police rapidly figured out the whole plan and arrested all criminals, successfully preventing the bomb from exploding." Talk about a plot twist!

Fans did not find this funny, they were raging. Chuck Palahniuk, the author of the original novel, had a laugh about it though. He quipped, "This is SUPER wonderful! Everyone gets a happy ending in China!" But the backlash from fans was swift and loud.

The Departed

Now, The Departed is still a big hit with critics and it even scored the Academy Award for Best Picture. But the film's ending is a major hot topic. Fans have been buzzing about it in reviews and discussions, feeling like it did not quite do justice to the complex characters and the twisty plot that had been built up so carefully throughout the movie.

The Departed wraps up with a string of sudden deaths, including the main characters. Some viewers thought it was just too abrupt, and that final shot with the rat scurrying across the balcony, left many scratching their heads.

No country for old men

No Country for Old Men has this gripping story and incredible acting that keeps you invested in it. But then, bam! The ending hit, and not everyone knew what to make of it. Some folks were left wondering what just happened. For example, take this one Reddit user who vented out saying, "I am very confused and very disappointed. 2 hours of complete engrossment in the movie... and THAT'S the ending I get?!"

The movie wraps up with Sheriff Bell reflecting on his dreams and the ever-changing world, which has sparked all sorts of interpretations. Some people see it as a wise take on time passing and the nature of evil, while others think it missed the mark by not tying things up neatly.

LA confidential

L.A. Confidential's ending is a whole other story. The film though greatly praised and celebrated, did get mixed reactions for its endings. Some thought that the way it wraps up all those tangled plotlines was just a bit too neat and boring like you knew this it was going to happen, there was no punch.

On Reddit, people have been having quite the debate about this with some people saying out how bummed they were by how predictable it all felt. Even with the complaints, many still see L.A. Confidential as a top-notch flick in the genre, thanks to its twisty plot and stellar acting.

(500) Days of Summer

In (500) Days of Summer, you will follow Tom on a rollercoaster ride of love and heartbreak that is both touching and something many can relate to.  The movie shows the ups and downs of relationships in a way that feels real. After all this goodness, there comes the ending that leaves everything unwrapped. By bringing in a new woman, Autumn at the end the film left the end as a start to a whole other story.

The open-ended finish to the movie left many frustrated, with the way it left a chapter unfinished, the story that you spent time following just left like that definitely came as quite a shock to the viewers and even angered some.

Now you see me

Now You See Me was looking up to be a fun and wild ride through magic and heists, but then sadly, the ending let it down. So, here is the deal: the big reveal was that FBI agent Dylan Rhodes, played by Mark Ruffalo, was the mastermind behind all the illusions. Why? Revenge for his dad's death. His father, Lionel Shrike, was a magician who died during a botched escape trick, and Dylan's whole elaborate plan was his way of seeking justice.

Suddenly finding out Dylan was pulling all the strings behind the Horsemen's acts left a lot of fans feeling a bit cheated. Now, while this twist was supposed to add some depth to the story, it felt like an easy way out. It took away from all the suspense of the film and left many untied ends that added to the frustration of the audience. Whether it is a plot twist, a conclusion that feels rushed, or just a plain old anticlimax after an exciting build-up, a bad ending tends to linger longer than you would like. Endings apart, all these films are among some of the great films that have made it to your screens, some great movies go unseen, like every underrated movie of 2024 that you probably did not bother about, and you should watch
