In an effort to increase the screening of privately funded films from around the globe, the French government has started a program known as IRIS. It is a part of the broader effort by France to influence the worldwide cinema market, as evidenced by the Lumiere Summit conference. The French government is attempting to create what it has called "the Lumiere Alliance" of international cinema commissions in addition to launching IRIS.

According to materials distributed at the summit, the purpose of IRIS is to protect, strengthen, and connect the theaters, distributors, and nonprofit networks that enable film diversity and to promote independent film circulation globally, especially where local actors are most isolated, vulnerable, or under threat.

Strengthening ties between filmmakers and the nonprofits, governmental commissions, and private investors who support independent film financing is one of IRIS's main goals. On September 22, French President Emmanuel Macron will host a meeting in New York to talk more about the IRIS initiative.
