James Gunn is fighting tooth and nail to protect the secret behind Adria Arjona’s Man of Tomorrow role, and in the process has recently debunked the rumors of her casting as Wonder Woman. The casting of Arjona in Gunn’s sequel to his 2025 film, Superman, has sparked widespread rumors of the actress entering the DCU as Wonder Woman or, most probably, the alien queen Maxima ever since it was formally announced earlier this summer.
However, the DC Studios’ plight with the speculation was exacerbated recently, and Gunn had to step in to categorically quash the rumor of Arjona playing Wonder Woman in Man of Tomorrow.
James Gunn’s definitive response to Wonder Woman rumors
Speculation regarding Adria Arjona’s Wonder Woman casting flared up once again on October 4 when Frank Grillo, who portrays Rick Flag Sr., shared a fan-crafted Man of Tomorrow poster to his Instagram Story. The image highlighted much of the announced cast, prominently featuring Adria Arjona as Wonder Woman, prompting DCU head James Gunn to swiftly step in and clear the air.
Taking to Threads, Gunn joked that Grillo had simply reposted the graphic out of self-admiration because his own picture appeared in it, while reassuring fans that the actor is entirely out of the loop regarding Arjona’s actual role or the scale of any potential cameo. Gunn also urged fans not to read too deeply into the share, though notably, he stopped short of explicitly confirming or denying the Wonder Woman rumors.

To illustrate the point, the DCU mastermind shared a screenshot of a private text exchange with Grillo on his Threads handle. In the messages, Gunn playfully scolded the actor for fueling the fire with Wonder Woman and Blue Beetle posts, warning that he was setting fans up for massive disappointment. Grillo quickly apologized, explaining that he had simply stumbled across the striking poster multiple times and reposted it without knowing any details, promising to refrain from sharing fan art going forward. Gunn noted that the lighthearted exchange allowed him to defuse the situation constructively.
Although Adria Arjona’s official joining of the cast was confirmed at CinemaCon in April 2026, her specific character remained under wraps.
The mystery behind Adria Arjona’s DCU character continues
While industry trades heavily circulated reports that she would portray Maxima, the alien queen renowned in comic book lore for her relentless fixation on Superman, James Gunn was quick to push back, emphasizing that he was by no means validating those claims. He had previously knocked down an early Deadline report within an hour of its release, reiterating that every major role for the project had already been made public.

Despite the studio's efforts to manage expectations, the Wonder Woman rumor stubbornly persists. Fueling the fire, Gunn has previously remarked that Arjona would make an exceptional Wonder Woman, and fans previously went into a frenzy simply because he followed her on Instagram. Meanwhile, Arjona has played her cards close to her chest; when directly questioned about the Amazonian warrior rumors, she sidestepped a confirmation or denial, instead praising DCU architects Gunn and Peter Safran as family and expressing excitement over joining the franchise.
