Just as Olive Smith's trouble in paradise has ended with a happy ending with Dr. Evil, Lili Reinhart seems to have one as she aims to adapt a queer novella to life, with studios not picking up the script. The Riverdale star has barely stepped out of Olive's shoes in The Love Hypothesis, but she already has another literary romance in her sights.

This time, however, the story would take her somewhere very different, swapping fake dating and academic rivals for a queer vampire romance that she has been trying to bring to the screen. But while the actor is ready to sink her teeth into the material (quite literally), Hollywood appears to be proving less eager to take the bite.

While Olive struggled to secure a larger lab in The Love Hypothesis for her research, Lili Reinhart is struggling to get a studio for her next romantic adventure. Speaking to Hits Radio, Reinhart revealed that she is trying to develop a film adaptation of a lesbian vampire novella but has encountered resistance from studios. 

“People are too afraid to make that. So, if you work at a studio and are watching this video, I don’t know why you wouldn’t make that in this day and age," she said.

While Reinhart did not reveal the novella's title, many fans in the Hits Radio video have guessed it as Irish author Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu’s Carmilla (1872), about a young Austrian woman pursued by the eponymous vampire.

Studios might be hesitant to bring such a script to life due to discourse surrounding the genre of romantasy, which is a hit only amongst a particular population. And as Reinhart still looks for a studio, she faced the challenge of navigating Olive Smith and meeting the expectations of the readers while bringing her to life. 

If the lesbian vampire romance is giving Lili Reinhart trouble behind the scenes, her experience with The Love Hypothesis shows that she is not unfamiliar with the risks of adapting a book that already has a devoted audience.

Speaking to India Today, Reinhart acknowledged that actors can be nervous about taking on adaptations because readers already have their own idea of how a character should look and behave.

“Some people just aren’t going to love your specific interpretation, and that’s okay. I think a lot of actors probably don’t take the role sometimes because they’re afraid of the backlash,” she said.

But when it came to Olive, she said the excitement outweighed those concerns. That confidence also extended to her work behind the camera. As an executive producer on The Love Hypothesis, Reinhart said she had “definitely” given notes on the script and had roughly a year to work with the team before filming. 

And now that the movie is out, some feel justice was done to the beloved book, while a major chunk still stands disappointed with how the changes and script panned out. 

The Love Hypothesis taught Reinhart how much care—and how much negotiation—can go into bringing a fan-favorite book to the screen. With her yet to be picked up vampire novella, she may be preparing to do it all over again, just with considerably more fangs.
