Agatha Christie’s mysteries have survived generations of sleuths, but now one of her most adventurous detective duos is getting a thoroughly modern makeover. Tommy & Tuppence brings the beloved amateur investigators into present-day London, combining murder, romance, secrets and witty banter in a six-part British mystery drama.
The upcoming series marks the first modern English-language television adaptation of Tommy Beresford and Tuppence Cowley. With a stellar cast led by Antonia Thomas and Josh Dylan, the show promises to retain the spirit of Christie’s puzzles while giving the characters a contemporary romantic and personal twist. For Sherlock Holmes fans who enjoy clever mysteries with plenty of character chemistry, this could be one to watch.

At the heart of Tommy & Tuppence are Antonia Thomas and Josh Dylan. Thomas, known for The Good Doctor and Still Up, plays Tuppence Cowley, an energetic actress who has recently returned to London. Dylan, who has appeared in The Buccaneers and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, stars as Tommy Beresford, a charming and meticulous crime novelist struggling with writer’s block. Their characters share a complicated romantic history, making their reunion as emotionally messy as it is mysterious.

The cast also includes Imelda Staunton as Tommy’s formidable Aunt Ada, a former owner of a detective agency who becomes an important source of assistance for the pair. Nicholas Richardson plays Julius, while Charlie Condou appears as Albert. Callie Cooke and Chizzy Akudolu take on the roles of Detective Sergeant Draper and Detective Inspector Merriot, respectively. The guest cast includes Sebastian De Souza, Sean Pertwee, Saffron Burrows, Alex Jennings, Denise Black and Alice Krige, adding plenty of familiar faces to the mystery-filled ensemble.
Sometimes, solving a murder is easier than figuring out where an old romance stands and Tommy and Tuppence have plenty of unfinished business.
What is the Agatha Christie Series about?
The story begins when former lovers Tommy Beresford and Tuppence Cowley unexpectedly reunite at a lavish wedding after spending roughly a decade apart following a difficult breakup. Their reunion takes a dark turn when one of the wedding guests is murdered. When an old friend becomes the prime suspect, Tommy and Tuppence decide to investigate the case themselves.
With Aunt Ada offering her experience and guidance, the pair find themselves drawn into a world of secrets, suspects, red herrings and hidden motives. Their investigations also reignite the chemistry between them, creating a will-they/won’t-they dynamic that runs alongside the murder mysteries. Tommy’s career as a crime novelist also takes an interesting turn as working alongside Tuppence helps him rediscover his inspiration.

Rather than simply transporting Christie’s original stories into the present day, the series takes inspiration from the Tommy & Tuppence books and short stories, including The Secret Adversary. Modern London, smartphones, social media and contemporary relationships become part of the mystery-solving landscape, while the show retains the classic Christie ingredients of twists, deception and amateur sleuthing. The six episodes are reportedly structured around three separate cases, giving the season multiple mysteries to unravel.
And with the suspects carrying smartphones instead of telegrams, Christie’s classic sleuths are about to enter a very different kind of detective game.
Tommy & Tuppence release date
Tommy & Tuppence premieres on BritBox on September 15, 2026, with the series debuting in the US and Canada. The six-part drama is expected to release episodes weekly after its premiere. As of early September 2026, the series has not yet been released, so viewers still have a little time before Tommy and Tuppence begin their latest investigation.
The series is produced by Lookout Point, part of BBC Studios, in association with Agatha Christie Limited. Phoebe Eclair-Powell serves as writer and executive producer, while Fergus O’Brien directs the first four episodes and Ellie Heydon directs the final two. Filmed in London, the production blends the atmosphere of contemporary British drama with the classic mystery framework that made Christie’s work so enduring.

Tommy & Tuppence looks set to give Agatha Christie’s underrated detective duo a fresh identity without losing what makes them so entertaining. Between a complicated reunion, multiple murder cases, a modern London setting and the irresistible chemistry between its leads, the series has plenty going for it.
For Christie fans, it offers a new way to experience characters who first appeared more than a century ago. For newcomers, it could be an entertaining introduction to one of the author’s lesser-known partnerships with murder, romance and a few red herrings thrown in for good measure.
