For a character who has been swinging through New York for decades, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has found some surprisingly fertile ground on the other side of the world. Tom Holland’s fourth outing as Peter Parker has crossed the $1.67 billion mark globally. The ample box office harvest is, in fact, now watching China and India emerge as two of the film's most formidable international strongholds.

The interesting part is not simply that Spider-Man is making money there. It is how decisively Brand New Day has connected with audiences in markets that operate by very different box office rules.

India has rewritten Spider-Man’s Hollywood record book

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has now become the highest-grossing Hollywood film ever released in India, overtaking Avatar: The Way of Water after just 11 days. Deadline reports that the movie added $10.6 million over the weekend to reach a cumulative $52.8 million in the market. The result is even more striking when viewed against the market itself.

International films typically command only a minority share of India's theatrical business, making a Hollywood superhero movie breaking through at this level less a routine franchise victory and more a genuine market event. Before release, Brand New Day was already generating unusually aggressive advance demand, with BookMyShow reporting 800,000 tickets sold ahead of opening and the film recording the biggest Hollywood advance booking since Deadpool & Wolverine's pre-bookings in 2023.

That pre-release frenzy explains part of the phenomenon, but it does not explain the legs. Spider-Man has something many Hollywood imports struggle to manufacture in India: cultural familiarity without requiring cultural translation.

China is where that bet has become particularly fascinating.

China has turned Brand New Day into a box office beast

Spider-Man: Brand New Day stayed at No. 1 in mainland China during the August 7 to 9 weekend, adding roughly RMB196.6 million, or $28.9 million, in its second full weekend. Its cumulative haul was reported at about $185.4 million at that point, making China one of the film’s biggest international markets. More recent international estimates put the Chinese total even higher, at approximately $186.7 million.

That matters because China has not simply treated Brand New Day as another imported superhero sequel. The film has sustained momentum beyond its opening rush, which is often the difficult part for franchise blockbusters. A second-weekend hold at this scale suggests that the appeal is extending beyond hardcore Marvel fandom and into the broader theatrical audience.

With Brand New Day now at $1.67 billion worldwide and past $1 billion internationally, China and India are no longer footnotes in the Spider-Man box office story. They are central chapters. For Sony and Marvel, that may be the most valuable lesson of all.

After years of franchise fatigue debates, Spider-Man has reminded Hollywood that sometimes the strongest global IP is not the one with the most complicated mythology. It is the one audiences already understand instinctively.
