Spider-Man: Brand New Day carried years of anticipation into theaters, backed by a returning cast and box office expectations befitting a Marvel Cinematic Universe tentpole. Tom Holland stepped back into the suit alongside Mark Ruffalo and Jon Bernthal, ready to give Peter Parker a fresh start. A month earlier, Supergirl, DC Studios' own superhero release, had already faced a very different reception at theaters. The gap between the two is impossible to ignore.

Numbers rarely spell things out this bluntly, and the distance between these two superhuman releases turned into something nobody could look away from.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day needed only one day to surpass the entire theatrical run of Supergirl. The Marvel release opened domestically between $167 million and $173 million, including previews, a sum that already climbed past Supergirl's complete worldwide gross of $125 million. Milly Alcock's DC debut wrapped its box office journey before Tom Holland's film even finished its first twenty-four hours in release. The gap instantly reframed how the two comic book franchises stacked up this year.

Supergirl carried a reported budget of $170 million, meaning it needed between $340 million and $425 million just to break even. Falling short of even the lower mark left DC Studios facing a loss stretching into the hundreds of millions. Spider-Man: Brand New Day, made on a $225 million budget, is projected to open domestically above $330 million, with some estimates suggesting it could challenge Avengers: Endgame's all-time domestic opening weekend record of $357.1 million. The financial contrast between the two releases could barely be sharper.

While domestic numbers already impressed, an even bigger milestone was quietly unfolding overseas, in a market superhero movies had struggled with for years.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day breaks a seven year curse in China

Spider-Man: Brand New Day earned $16.5 million in China by midday on its opening day, with projections placing its full day total near $37.4 million. That figure marked the strongest single-day opening for an American superhero film in the territory since Spider-Man: Far From Home in 2019. The result also surpassed the previous benchmark set by Venom: The Last Dance, ending a seven-year stretch during which American superhero releases had failed to reclaim their earlier dominance in the region.

That overseas surge now feeds into a global opening projected near $465 million, a number that would make Spider-Man: Brand New Day Sony Pictures' second biggest worldwide debut behind only Spider-Man: No Way Home. Domestic presales have reportedly reached around $80 million, edging past Spider-Man: No Way Home's $78 million mark. Between a revived Chinese market and a single day that already dwarfed Supergirl's entire run, Tom Holland's Spider-Man has turned Spider-Man: Brand New Day into one of the year's clearest box office statements.
