Robert Downey Jr. and Tom Holland’s bond began in Captain America: Civil War, when Tony Stark first met a teenage Peter Parker for the first time onscreen. That awkward, funny, and deeply human chemistry quickly became one of the most endearing dynamics in the MCU, with Tony serving as Peter’s mentor, father figure, and superhero guide across Spider-Man: Homecoming, Far From Home, and Avengers: Infinity War. Their relationship reached its tearful, iconic climax in Avengers: Endgame, when Tony’s death leaves Peter shattered and marks the emotional end of that chapter for the Studio.
But the story of how they even got to play mentor and student together has a wild, embarrassing twist from their first screen test.

On an appearance on the Rich Roll podcast earlier this year, Tom Holland revealed that shortly before his big Marvel screen test with Robert Downey Jr., he got so nervous and overenthusiastic that he emptied the entire hotel minibar, nd then faced an embarrassing confrontation with his employing studio itself.
“When I did my first screen test with Downey. The night before, I polished off the minibar and Marvel found out about that,” Holland said.
That moment of panic was especially scary because this screen test would determine whether he became Spider-Man in the MCU, the role that would define his career and bring him into the Avengers. The executives did not just shrug it off; they kept the story alive in future conversations.
“Whenever it came up in conversations, they were like ‘yeah yeah we know about that, we asked the hotel,’” Holland recalled.
So at the test, he was already sweating over the minibar incident while acting alongside the man playing Tony Stark, someone he had admired since childhood. Despite the embarrassment, that audition went perfectly well, and Tom Holland landed the role.
Meanwhile, Donwey Jr.’s daughter has treated fans to major hints from his MCU comeback as Dr Doom.
Robert Downey Jr.’s cryptic post sparks Avengers: Doomsday speculation
Robert Downey Jr.’s recent Father’s Day social media post has caught the attention of fans for more than sentimental reasons. The image features a childlike drawing of Doctor Doom flying kites with his son, but the details carry heavier implications. One kite bears the Avengers logo while the other shows the Fantastic Four insignia, and both are marked with a prohibited symbol.

At first glance, the post appears playful, but the symbolism hints at deeper narrative threads. The imagery suggests that Doom views both teams as threats to his family, potentially setting up a more personal and emotional conflict. This aligns with ongoing speculation about how the next phase of the MCU could raise the stakes beyond traditional hero-versus-villain dynamics.
Reports surrounding Avengers: Doomsday indicate a darker storyline tied to multiversal events. The idea that Doom’s motivations could stem from personal loss adds a layer of tragedy that mirrors some of the franchise’s most impactful arcs. Downey Jr. has also spoken about pushing boundaries and exploring stories that have not yet been fully realized, reinforcing the idea that the film may take bold narrative risks, hopefully not anything that might make Tom Holland clear out the minibar again.
