Tom Holland’s Spider-Man has been swinging through the streets of New York for nearly a decade now. Nearly 5 years after the third movie, No Way Home, the web-slinger is now back on the big screen with Spider-Man: Brand New Day. And the movie is already winning praise across the board. 

But the highest compliment yet has come from an unexpected legend. After attending the world premiere, a legendary comic book creator declared Holland as his favorite Spider-Man ever. He even went on to praise the movie as one of the first Spider-Man films to have captured the spirit of the character’s co-creator, Steve Ditko.

Frank Miller, the well-known comic book creator, writer, and director, was in attendance at the world premiere of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. He had high praise for Tom Holland, even declaring him his favorite Spider-Man. Miller also commended director Destin Daniel Cretton for creating a movie that reminded him of artist Steve Ditko, the co-creator of Spider-Man alongside Stan Lee.

“The most Ditko movie yet and with my Hand in it for all to celebrate,” Miller wrote on his Instagram post. “This fan’s dream come true. Tom Holland is my forever Spider-Man as romantic as he is heroic. Congratulations to Destin and the whole team.”

His post also included pictures from the premiere, including one of Miller meeting director Destin Daniel Cretton. Miller has written several iconic superhero comics for both Marvel and DC. The Dark Knight Returns and Batman: Year One are among his most celebrated works. So, given his legacy in the comic book world, his praise carried plenty of weight. 

And Miller is not the only legendary comic book writer to praise the movie. Michael Straczynski, who has also written for both Marvel and DC, shared a few words to praise Brand New Day. He praised Cretton, calling the film one of the most authentic portrayals of Peter Parker and Spider-Man.

“It’s a very human story, emotional without being slow or dull or self-indulgent. It feels like stepping into a really good Spidey comic,” Straczynski wrote on X.

Understandably, the movie and its final cut, which has been earning praise, did not come together so easily, as Tom Holland revealed during the promotional activities.

During the film’s promotional campaign on Quotable, Tom Holland opened up about the editing process behind Spider-Man: Brand New Day. He revealed that the movie went through several cuts and revisions, with one of the early versions being disliked by the entire team because it did not align with their creative vision. Several scenes were ultimately removed or reworked, including one featuring Rosario Dawson as Claire Temple. 

“It totally didn’t work & it was what the people were asking for, but it wasn’t quite what we wanted as the creatives,” he said.

Another scene, which would have seen Spider-Man go up against some of his oldest villains, was considered but never filmed. The team continued to cut, add, and rearrange scenes until they arrived at the final version of the movie. Ultimately, after several cuts and creative changes, Spider-Man: Brand New Day seems to have found the version that even the comic book legends can get behind.
