Tom Holland is certainly not the only one to be amazed by the breathtaking visuals in Christopher Nolan's films. But what continues to baffle both the 30-year-old actor and the director's audiences is Nolan's dedication to relying on practical effects rather than CGI. The filmmaker is well-known for prioritizing practical filmmaking techniques.

And yet he consistently manages to show awe-inspiring stunts and stunning cinematography that leave viewers both impressed and astonished. That is perhaps what kept Holland awake at night after watching The Odyssey.

Tom Holland is perhaps among the lucky few to have watched the final cut of his film The Odyssey ahead of its release. The actor admitted that he was both amazed and puzzled by how Christopher Nolan managed to pull off the film's stunts and several other scenes without relying on CGI. Speaking to Empire, Holland revealed that this was the one question he was desperate to ask the acclaimed director after watching the film.

“When the movie finished, it was late at night ... had it been 5 o’clock in the afternoon, I would have said to Chris, ‘Do you mind if we just throw it on again?’ Your brain is going, ‘I don’t understand how he’s done that without using CGI'" he told Empire Magazine.

This approach, which astonished Holland (via Empire), is nothing new for the director, who famously grew a massive cornfield for his 2014 hit Interstellar. Instead of relying heavily on CGI, he used practical effects to recreate the film's dust storms. While the director does involve CGI when necessary, he prefers practical filmmaking techniques, using carefully planned camera angles and miniature sets to bring his vision to life.

After starring in The Odyssey, Holland likely has a much better understanding of how Nolan executes these ambitious sequences. Even if he does not know every detail, he may get another opportunity to work with the director in the future.

The two have spoken highly of each other's work, with Nolan recently expressing his desire to collaborate with Holland again.

Christopher Nolan is eager to work with Tom Holland again

Christopher Nolan first worked with Tom Holland on The Odyssey. The Spider-Man actor played Odysseus' son, Telemachus. After their collaboration on the movie, the acclaimed director revealed that he hopes to reunite with Holland on another project in the future.

“I’ve not worked with him before, but I would love to work with him again. I mean, he’s just an incredible talent. He’s so, so great,” Nolan said on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert

Holland has expressed similar sentiments in previous interviews. He previously described working with Nolan as one of the biggest achievements of his career and also praised his co-star, Matt Damon, for making the experience even more memorable. Given Nolan's reputation for frequently reuniting with actors from his past projects, there's every chance the filmmaker and Holland could collaborate again. And if that happens, Holland might finally get a closer look at how Nolan pulls off his signature practical effects on set.
