Tom Cruise has made a career out of turning movie danger into something tactile, from hanging off aircraft to doing motorcycle stunts that look engineered to make insurance executives nervous. That commitment to physical reality works naturally when he is Ethan Hunt or another action hero built around speed, precision, and spectacle. But what happens when Cruise has to become someone almost entirely unlike himself?

For Digger, that question starts with a rather unexpected piece of anatomy. The actor has traded his familiar action-star silhouette for a much bulkier look, complete with a fat suit, wig, facial prosthetics, and, apparently, a prosthetic behind.

During his September 17 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Tom Cruise and Jimmy Fallon got into the weeds of the transformation. Fallon held up a photograph of Cruise as Digger Rockwell and pointed out the elaborate prosthetics and having seen his "butt", only for Cruise to immediately clarify.

“That’s prosthetic, I can do better than that,” he answered with a wide smile. 

  The exchange on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon became a miniature lesson in how far the Digger transformation goes. Fallon joked that the rear looked real and suggested it might be “method acting,” while Cruise insisted it was not. The joke works because the rest of the transformation is so deliberately convincing.

Cruise plays Digger Rockwell, a wealthy oil tycoon who believes he can save humanity from a catastrophe he helped unleash, with the film surrounding him with Riz Ahmed, Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, Jesse Plemons and Michael Stuhlbarg.  

There is a particularly Cruise-like irony to the whole thing. The same actor associated with practical action spectacle is now using practical effects to make himself look decidedly less like Tom Cruise.

But the physical joke only scratches the surface of what Cruise was attempting with Digger.

Tom Cruise has described the role as a genuine departure, particularly because the challenge was no longer whether he could physically survive a stunt, but whether he could sustain a character through an extended piece of dramatic performance. On The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, he explained that Digger contains a 10-minute monologue filmed entirely in one take, running roughly 10 to 12 pages of dialogue.

He compared the experience to standing on a cliff and wondering what will happen next. 

That comparison is revealing because Digger is not simply Cruise stepping away from action. It is Cruise applying the same appetite for preparation and physical commitment to a character who requires transformation rather than athletic spectacle. He has also recalled Alejandro G. Iñárritu showing him how he wanted Digger to look, prompting Cruise to respond, “You’ve got some cojones, my friend. Let’s go!” 

Digger arrives in theaters and IMAX on October 2, with Warner Bros. positioning it as Iñárritu’s original film rather than another franchise chapter. Cruise may still be the man who runs toward explosions, but Digger suggests that his next stunt is disappearing underneath the character.
