Tom Cruise has spent decades transforming impossible missions, global espionage, and death-defying stunts into one of Hollywood’s most unstoppable blockbuster legacies. But just as Mission: Impossible seemingly reached its final reckoning in 2025, fresh industry rumours now suggest Cruise may already be preparing to plunge back into another dangerous world of spy paranoia alongside Paramount.

If Hollywood’s growing rumors turn out to be true, Cruise’s next espionage saga may become far more psychologically dangerous than anything Ethan Hunt ever survived.

With the rumors growing heavy enough to finally burst across Hollywood, Tom Cruise is reportedly circling Paramount’s upcoming spy thriller DOPPELGÄNGER. According to industry insider Jeff Sneider, the actor has already held multiple meetings with writer Aneesh Chaganty regarding the paranoia-fueled project.

While the deal is reportedly not locked yet, the project has already generated major industry buzz ever since Skydance secured the rights back in 2025. As of now, DOPPELGÄNGER has no official release date attached.

If Cruise officially signs on, the actor will reportedly play CIA agent Veer, whose world collapses after discovering Russia has recruited his exact double as a mole. However, the espionage chaos reportedly spirals even further, as multiple Veer doppelgängers may also be operating within the story, potentially throwing Cruise into one of the most psychologically twisted spy roles of his career. The thriller is also backed by a heavyweight producing lineup, including Ryan Coogler, Zinzi Coogler, Sev Ohanian, Natalie Qasabian, and Chaganty himself, instantly pushing the mysterious project into major blockbuster territory.

Tom Cruise’s spy legacy still rules Hollywood action cinema

For nearly three decades, Tom Cruise has remained Hollywood’s undisputed king of spy-action spectacle through the Mission: Impossible franchise, transforming Ethan Hunt into one of cinema’s most iconic espionage figures. From Brian De Palma’s 1996 original to The Final Reckoning in 2025, Cruise spent eight films surviving rogue IMF betrayals, nuclear threats, shadow syndicates, AI warfare, Kremlin explosions, and some of the most death-defying stunts modern action cinema has ever witnessed.

But Cruise’s espionage legacy never remained limited to Ethan Hunt alone. Beyond the Mission: Impossible empire, the actor also stepped into chaotic undercover worlds through films like Knight and Day, where he played eccentric rogue agent Roy Miller opposite Cameron Diaz, and American Made, which saw him portray real-life CIA-linked pilot Barry Seal during the dangerous covert operations of the 1980s.

And now, with fresh rumors surrounding DOPPELGÄNGER, Cruise may once again be preparing to dominate the spy genre all over again.
