Tom Cruise recently took a firm stand against the over-integration of AI in the movie-making business. Growing concerns over labor and artistic integrity have already led to full-blown strikes in Hollywood in the last few years. However, AI still remains an active and evolving threat to the movie industry.

Particularly for someone like Cruise, who rarely relies on even stuntmen or body doubles, giving machines greater control over human craft is something he just can not condone. Tom Cruise recently voiced his sentiments at the BAFTA Awards, earning a round of applause from the attendees.

Tom Cruise stopped by the recent BAFTA event in London and delivered a passionate six minutes long speech about the power of art over AI. Although Cruise did not try to ban AI entirely, as it is inevitable, he took a stand against the idea of replacing human art with AI. 

"There is nothing like human," declared Cruise, adding, "people want human experience," as reported by Deadline.

Cruise also talked about the summer blockbuster, driven by The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day, as prime examples of people wanting human experience over machine learning, as per Deadline. Recently, Charlize Theron, too, looked to these billion-dollar blockbusters as a reminder of what makes moviegoing special. Such support from stars like the Mission: Impossible actor has helped keep the AI-versus-human creativity debate in focus since the 2023 strikes.

Tom Cruise has not only stood up for labor rights in the past but has also reflected his belief in human ingenuity through the themes explored in his films.

Tom Cruise played a significant role during the high-stakes SAG-AFTRA labor negotiations. The actor even joined a Zoom session personally to lobby the studios in the negotiating room. He pushed the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) to protect stunt performers and coordinators from being automated away by digital algorithms. 

His 2025 Mission: Impossible installment also featured a rogue, omnipresent artificial intelligence as the main antagonist of the film. Even his 2002 film, Minority Report, explored the dangers of predictive algorithms and automated surveillance. In many ways, this shows that Cruise has long perceived AI as a threat to human agency and decision-making.
