A cinematic miracle has emerged from the ashes of a cancelled project, promising a sultry and dangerous journey through the 1930s. The film that almost vanished into thin air is now a reality, bolstered by a powerhouse new leading man. Todd Haynes is back in the spotlight with his queer romantic neo-noir thriller titled De Noche. The production recently gained massive traction after Pedro Pascal joined the cast.

This project serves as a testament to creative resilience, as it has successfully navigated a turbulent development history to complete its principal photography.

The production journey reached a major milestone this month as the team celebrated a successful wrap.

Todd Haynes’ queer romantic neo-noir thriller De Noche has officially finished filming in Mexico as of April 2026. The production utilized diverse locations across Mexico City and Sonora to capture a dark and emotionally charged atmosphere reminiscent of Chinatown.

The story features Pedro Pascal as a 1930s detective alongside Danny Ramirez, who portrays a boarding school teacher caught in a web of intrigue. Their chemistry is expected to drive the narrative, which moves between the gritty streets of Los Angeles and the vibrant landscapes of Mexico.

“This story, with Pedro Pascal and Danny Ramirez in the two leads, arises out of an era, all too relevant to our own of domestic corruption, racial exploitation, and global terror,” writer and director Todd Haynes told Variety. International sales are currently being handled by MK2 Films, with industry experts labeling the thriller a standout project.

The creative structure of the film underwent a dramatic overhaul before the cameras could finally roll.

The history of the project, De Noche, is as dramatic as the film itself, originally beginning as a collaboration between Todd Haynes and Joaquin Phoenix. Joaquin Phoenix developed the initial idea and script alongside writers like Jonathan Raymond before abruptly exiting the production two weeks prior to the start date.

This sudden departure caused the entire venture to collapse temporarily until a new lead was secured. Pedro Pascal eventually signed on to the project, effectively bringing the script back to life and allowing production to proceed. He leads a diverse cast that includes Darío Rocas, Mursi Haynes, and Victor Suarez under the guidance of veteran producer Christine Vachon.

The ensemble worked diligently to ensure that the original creative intent remained intact despite the early casting crisis. While the initial star walked away, the current team has expressed immense pride in the version they have captured on film. This resilience has transformed a potential failure into one of the most anticipated releases in the neo-noir genre.
