Marvel bringing back Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine through the multiverse gave fans a rare burst of nostalgia, and it was genuinely exciting to see those legacy heroes share the screen again. But the newest Avengers: Doomsday rumors suggest that their return may come with a much darker twist.

Turning that brief thrill into something far more ominous.

It could end quick for Spiderman and Wolverine

Reports circulating online claim that Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man and Wolverine may only appear in the film’s opening battle for around three minutes before being killed off. Most notably, known Marvel scoop account by the name of Earth 616 made a post saying that the sequence involves Deadpool and Wolverine being sent to Tobey’s Earth, where chaos erupts in a clash with Spider-Man, the Fox X-Men, and possibly Doctor Octopus as well.

The Earth 616 account on X further relayed that many believe that Tobey’s world is destroyed in the process, which would make the scene feel less like a reunion and more like a catastrophic sendoff. That said, none of this has been confirmed by Marvel Studios, and all of it should be taken with a grain of salt.  The reporting is contradictory too.

With some insiders saying Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man survives while others insist he is gone early in the movie. For now, the safest read is that Avengers: Doomsday is being built around a fast, brutal multiversal opening that could give fans one last look at two beloved icons before the story takes a much darker turn.

If that opening truly sets the tone, the rest of the film may lean heavily into spectacle and legacy.

Trailer hype turns Avengers: Doomsday into a full blown event film

The first Avengers: Doomsday trailer has clearly turned curiosity into full blown event movie mania, with fans showing up in massive numbers just to catch the next chapter of Marvel’s multiverse. That kind of response says a lot about how much goodwill the franchise still has when it leans into legacy heroes, big crossover energy, and a genuinely massive scale.

The trailer’s huge launch also reinforces how much the audience still craves Marvel’s biggest names sharing the frame again. Even with the MCU in a different phase than the Avengers: Endgame era, the combination of Avengers, X-Men, and familiar faces has given this film instant momentum.

One of the biggest talking points remains Chris Evans’ return, though there is still uncertainty over whether he is back as Captain America or in some other version of Steve Rogers. That ambiguity only adds to the intrigue, because Marvel is clearly keeping the full picture under wraps for now. For the moment, Avengers: Doomsday looks less like a film with one headline and more like a giant puzzle built to keep fans guessing until release day.
