Spider-Man fans have somehow hit the superhero jackpot, with Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland each leaving a distinctive mark on the suit. Now, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day is climbing higher by the day, crossing $1.67 billion worldwide while steering Peter Parker toward a grittier, lonelier New York adventure. With its success and multi-versal crossovers expected in Avengers: Doomsday, one would expect Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield to possibly make a comeback with their own solo films. But that may be harder to do thanks to Sony's deal with the MCU, and Disney's growing fear of competitors to its Spider-Man success.

Yet, in a particularly cruel twist of the multiverse, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man may be the very reason Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield cannot swing back.

The John Campea Show has raised an intriguing possibility for Spider-Man fans: Sony may have little incentive to let Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield headline solo movies while Tom Holland’s MCU incarnation keeps printing money. With Spider-Man: Brand New Day soaring at the box office, another Spider-Man franchise could create unwanted competition for the same web.

That makes the Marvel Cinematic Universe, whose parent company is Disney, a rather enormous spider-shaped obstacle to the older wall crawlers. If Tom Holland’s Peter Parker remains Sony’s biggest live-action Spider-Man asset, giving Tobey Maguire or Andrew Garfield competing solo franchises could risk splitting audiences, attention, and, most importantly, those lucrative Spider-Man dollars.

On The John Campea Show, Josh Campea raised this possibility alongside Tom Rothman’s Variety comments that Sony currently has no live-action Marvel spin-offs in active development. After Morbius, Madame Web, and Kraven the Hunter stumbled, Sony may simply be tightening its web around what works, leaving older Spider-Men waiting for another multiversal miracle.

With Tobey Maguire rumored to be swinging back for Avengers: Doomsday and more appearances potentially on the horizon, it is worth asking why Holland remains the MCU’s only Spider-Man.

Tom Holland is considered the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s only Spider-Man because he was the one Peter Parker created specifically for the historic Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures arrangement. After Sony retained the film rights, the 2015 deal finally allowed Marvel Studios to fold Spider-Man into its interconnected world. Holland was then cast to make that shared universe feel seamless.

Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, meanwhile, originated in separate Sony continuities before Spider-Man: No Way Home temporarily pulled both into the MCU as multiversal variants. Their Peters eventually returned to their respective realities, leaving Holland’s Peter Parker as Earth-616’s resident web-slinger. So while the multiverse can accommodate three Spider-Men, only Tom Holland’s Spider-Man actually calls the MCU home.
