Fresh off the buzz of Marty Supreme, where Timothée Chalamet stepped into the role of table-tennis prodigy Marty Mauser and his then Oscar nomination, the actor has been riding a strong wave of attention across the entertainment world. Yet amid that momentum, Chalamet now finds himself facing fresh backlash after a remark made during a discussion with Matthew McConaughey at the Variety and CNN Town Hall event, claiming that no one really cares about opera and ballet.

“I don’t want to be working in ballet, or opera, or things where it’s like, ‘Hey, keep this thing alive, even though like no one cares about this anymore,’ Chalamet said to Matthew McConaughey. The comment has quickly stirred criticism from artists within the classical performance community, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York and the LA Opera.

“Sorry, @tchalamet. We’d offer you complimentary tickets to Akhnaten, but it’s selling out. There are a few seats left to purchase if you hurry,” LA Opera wrote on its Instagram. MET created a post, showing the craftmanship that goes into the craft, tagging the actor.

“This one’s for you, @tchalamet… 👀,” MET wrote.

Grammy-winning opera singer Isabelle Leonard called him "narrow-minded" under the comments of the chat between Chalamet and McConaughey. Others like, Canadian mezzo-soprano Deepa Johnny, ballet dancer Victor Caixeta, and Brazilian actor Thiago Fragoso also called him out and defended the enduring cultural legacy of opera and ballet.

The film will serve as the third and final instalment of Villeneuve’s Dune trilogy and continues Paul Atreides’ story after the events of Dune: Part Two, adapting Frank Herbert’s novel Dune Messiah. The upcoming chapter is expected to explore the political consequences of Paul’s rise to power and the growing tensions across the galaxy, with returning stars including Zendaya and Florence Pugh alongside Chalamet.

As Timothée Chalamet continues to dominate headlines with his recent remarks about opera, it seems the actor is not clearing the traffic of fandom buzz anytime soon. And with his grand return as Paul Atreides in Dune: Part Three, the road ahead seems only growing louder.
