Téa Leoni and Tim Daly have already lived the kind of romantic plot that television writers spend seasons trying to manufacture. The actors met as married co-stars on CBS’ Madam Secretary, while Leoni arrived with films such as Bad Boys, Jurassic Park III and Spanglish, and Daly carried the sitcom pedigree of Wings alongside dramatic work in Private Practice.

Now, they are taking that history back to the small screen with NBC’s Newlyweds, only this time the marriage comes first and the chaos follows. There is something deliciously meta about this particular casting, and NBC is leaning straight into it.

NBC has unveiled first-look photos from Newlyweds, giving viewers their first glimpse at Leoni and Daly as Jeanie and James, alongside Jamie Lee Curtis, Emma Meisel, Ignacio Diaz-Silverio, Bill O’Neill and Al Madrigal. The project marks another chapter in Tim Daly and Téa Leoni’s unusual television history, since the pair previously played husband and wife on Madam Secretary. That CBS drama ran for six seasons from 2014 to 2019, with Leoni portraying Elizabeth McCord and Daly as her husband, Henry. 

Their reunion is hardly a random bit of stunt casting. The two have spoken about wanting to work together again after their Madam Secretary experience, with Leoni saying, as per TV Insider that they were “sniffing around to play together again.” This time, however, the dynamic gets a comedic remix. Curtis plays Claudia, James’ ex-wife, while Meisel and Diaz-Silverio portray Jeanie’s children, Poppy and Lolo. NBC has a tendency to bring out old classics for a newer audience, except this time it is the couple who are back to the screens.

And that is where the real sitcom machinery starts humming.

Newlyweds follows Jeanie, a free-spirited woman, and James, a buttoned-up professor whose lives collide after a chance encounter at a valet stand. James is immediately captivated by Jeanie, and what begins with an unexpected dinner quickly accelerates into a whirlwind courtship and an impulsive marriage.  The catch is that James has built his life around order, quiet and routine, while Jeanie brings an entirely different frequency into the room. 

He soon realizes that married life with her will not resemble the calm existence he once imagined. Yet the emotional wager of the series is simple: James would rather disrupt his carefully arranged world than lose Jeanie. That gives Newlyweds a later-in-life romantic angle that feels distinct from the usual sitcom reset button.

With Daly and Leoni bringing more than a decade of real-life history to the roles, NBC has a particularly intriguing piece of casting chemistry on its hands. The first-look images suggest a comedy built around that lived-in familiarity, with Curtis adding another layer of friction as James’ ex.

NBC’s new comedy is set to make its fall debut on October 23, 2026.
