Xavier might have extraordinary telepathic abilities, but even the founder of the X-Men would struggle to squeeze daily head-shaving into his schedule, as it seems with Christopher Abbott's concerns. Playing one of Marvel’s most iconic mutants comes with plenty of responsibilities, from bringing the character’s complicated personality to life to making sure the portrayal feels right. But for Abbott, who is stepping into the shoes of Charles Xavier, his hair still needs to be figured out.

Abbott seems perfectly willing to embrace the look; his naturally thick hair could make maintaining it a rather demanding commitment. And apparently, the question is not simply whether he is ready to go bald, but whether he can stay that way.

A bald move? Christopher Abbott has one hairy concern

In an interview with Esquire, Christopher Abbott opened up about the possibility of shaving his head for the role, admitting that he has done it before and would be willing to do so again. However, his hair's apparent determination to grow back might complicate matters.

“My hair’s pretty thick. I’ve shaved my head for things before, and I’m down. But if my head is anything like my face, three hours later it’s going to be back. So I’m not sure because he’s not shaving his head every day. I want it to feel right,” he said.

Abbott’s comments suggest that he is approaching the character with more than just the familiar appearance in mind. He wants the physical transformation to make sense for the role, rather than simply ticking off a box because Professor X is traditionally bald.

But his potential baldness is only one small piece of Marvel’s much bigger plan for its mutant universe.

Meet Marvel’s new Mutant squad

Marvel Studios’ upcoming X-Men film is bringing a fresh generation of actors into the franchise, with director Jake Schreier steering the reboot. Abbott will play Professor X, joining Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, and Maya Boyd as Storm.

Adam Driver is also joining the ensemble as the villain Mister Sinister, known in the film by the alias Nathaniel Milbury. The new lineup marks another major step in bringing the X-Men into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The film is scheduled to hit theaters on May 5, 2028. With the cast assembled and Abbott preparing to tackle Xavier’s layered personality, fans have plenty to anticipate. For now, though, one mystery remains: will Professor X be sporting a freshly shaved head, or will Abbott’s famously fast-growing hair get the final say?X-Men
