In response to criticism following his recent appearance at FanExpo Canada, where the Oscar winner made fun of an ASL interpreter while entering the stage for his retrospective Q&A, Mel Gibson has apologized. On social media sites like X, a video of the incident became viral, and the Braveheart star was criticized for his callous behavior.

“Sometimes when you get pushed out on a stage in a spotlight your mind is all over the place, and sometimes spontaneous thoughtless idiocy is displayed,” Gibson said in a statement to Variety.

“There was no intended maliciousness attached, and I certainly apologize to anyone who was upset by it,” the actor added.

Every year, FanExpo Canada is billed as the third-largest Pop Culture event in North America and the biggest comics, sci-fi, horror, anime, and gaming convention in Canada. According to the event's website, Gibson's attendance at this year's expo on Saturday, August 29, included autograph and photo chances for fans, which cost $275 each.

Mel Gibson was introduced by moderator Liam Crowley at FanExpo Canada. At the Toronto event, the actor promptly took the stage. The audience members who are hard of hearing or deaf can observe the ASL interpreter signing. In the video from the event, Gibson seems to imitate, or make fun of, the ASL interpreter as he leaves. However, his statement to Variety containing his apology might help take some edge off the backlash.
