Thomasin McKenzie has steadily built an impressive filmography, moving between intimate dramas, major studio productions, and beloved fantasy franchises. The New Zealand-born actress first appeared in Peter Jackson’s Middle-earth with a small role in The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, long before taking on more prominent parts in projects such as Leave No Trace, Last Night in Soho, and The Power of the Dog.

Now, with another major role on the horizon, McKenzie has opened up about a franchise that remains particularly close to home. And when asked which franchise she would choose, McKenzie had a very familiar answer.

Thomasin McKenzie wants to return to Middle-earth

During an appearance on Collider Ladies Night with host Perri Nemiroff, Thomasin McKenzie was asked which film franchise she would join and whom she would want to play. Nemiroff initially ruled out The Lord of the Rings because McKenzie had already appeared in The Hobbit. However, McKenzie quickly pointed out just how small her previous role was.

"I actually probably would go with the Lord of the Rings," she said.

McKenzie explained that her appearance in The Hobbit was “minuscule,” joking that viewers would genuinely struggle to spot her unless they already knew where to look. That, in her mind, leaves the door open for a return to Middle-earth.

While no return has been announced, her answer makes clear that McKenzie would happily step back into Tolkien’s world if the opportunity came her way.

But Middle-earth is not the only major fantasy of McKenzie’s career worth revisiting. Not only is she set to appear alongside Andrew Garfield in The Uprising, but the actress is also preparing to portray one of Hollywood’s most enduring icons, Audrey Hepburn. And in the same conversation, she gave a sneak peek at it.

Thomasin McKenzie’s next major role will see her portray Audrey Hepburn in Dinner with Audrey, an upcoming film centered on the legendary actress. During the same Collider Ladies Night conversation, McKenzie reflected on the responsibility of taking on someone who has been a major influence on her own life and career.

The actress revealed that Hepburn has always been her “top icon ever” and said she took the role extremely seriously because she wanted to do the Hollywood star justice. Rather than focusing solely on Hepburn’s appearance, movements, or voice, McKenzie said she repeatedly returned to one fundamental idea while filming: Hepburn simply wanted to be loved.

"And so I think the thing that like while filming it, the thing that I kept coming back to was that she really just wanted to be loved," she said.

McKenzie wrapped the film only a couple of months before the interview and admitted that she still had not fully processed the experience. For now, audiences will have to wait to see her transformation into Hepburn, while her comments about Middle-earth have already sparked another intriguing possibility for the future.
